Five criminally overrated bands (in your opinion) and five criminally underrated bands (also in your opinion)...

I can't equate the reviews Dylan gets for his recent work, with the output, which just sounds like really dull blues.
And as for Radiohead....

I think there's a narrative in music journalism, that's really a load of b***ks. Last daft punk album they were all over them, the previous album no one was interested. Robyn was the latest the press decided to herald. The Beatles came along....and showed that anyone could play guitar. The pistols came along and showed that anyone could play guitar.....nirvana came along and showed that anyone could play guitar. People will profess embarrassment at enjoying a disco or pop song, whilst listening to dreary dadrock track after dadrock track with no shame whatsoever. Music is such an individual thing and yet it's so beset by fashion and trends.

I honestly can't understand anyone saying The Stones and Led Zep are over rated and then saying Big Country are under rated. I need to get off this thread coz my blood pressure's a risin... ha!
I can't understand anyone letting other people's tastes in music affect their BP! :D It's all as individual as liking marmite or not or how you have your jam and cream on a scone (there's a can of worms). Nobody is saying one band is better than the other, just what their tastes are, and maybe that they don't understand why one band is lauded to the rafters and the other is dismissed as irrelevant. No band that plays its own instruments, writes its own songs and gets a contract to make professional recordings can really be called crap, can they?

I know, it was written in jest really. I just can't get my head around why the Stones and led Zep can be classed as over rated, but, yeah, we all have opinions. I have friends who can't stand The Beatles and it just baffles me.

And of course it's all subjective, as is football. I think the Dutch in 74 were the best International side I've ever seen but I guess most would say Brazil 70.

The Stone Roses
The Fall
Sex Pistols
The Libertines

Porcupine Tree/Steven Wilson/Blackfield
Tragically Hip
Blue Rodeo
Climax Blues Band
Manfred Mann’s Earth Band

Underated:
Nightwish
Epica
Skarlett Riot
Anneke Van Giesrbergan
Blind Guardian

Thinking about Coldplay made me wonder what happens if Chris Martin leaves. I decided it's not really a problem as Neil from The Young Ones would be a ready made replacement.
This reminded me of another underrated band Bad News.

Obviously- this is all about opinions and if, like Erimus 74 and me you are stuck in the 70's and still wear flares, loons and massive collars with gold chains round your necks- here goes
Over rated -
10cc
Wings
Abba
Brotherhood of Man
The Who.

Under rated
Slade
Smokie
Sweet
Darts
The Carpenters

Oh, In my local there is a thirty something year old man who is convinced that he was born 20 years too late. He knows the words of every ( it seems like) chart song in the 70's and the atistes who sang them.

Overrated:
Muse
Coldplay
Green Day
U2
Wolf Alice

Underrated:
Pearl Jam
The Tragically Hip
Editors
The Hold Steady
The Little Ships
The Hold Steady (y) Seen them a few times, love Craig Finn. THS are absolutely superb. Pearl Jam I can understand why some folk have listed them as overrated, however, always been one of my favourite bands since a kid :)

Don't have a list to contribute though, sadly. Would be here forever :ROFLMAO:

Yup, that's the point innit. Come on fella, let's hear your choices then! (y) It's just a bit of fun.

I don’t have any really strong opinions on music actually. I’m rooted listening to the ancient pop tunage on stations like absolute 80s and Absolute 90s and Ken Bruce in the mornings. And Graham Norton at the weekends on Virgin. Occasionally I’ll dip into pick of the pops if it’s a year from the late 70s 80s or 90s

Unlike most of you I don’t mind some quality pop from the likes of Duran Duran, Wham, ABBA, even stuff from Girls Aloud, Kylie’s later stuff and Robbie Williams’ first few albums.

And I bloody love The KLF….

I’m not a rock / guitar music fan at all but don’t mind acts like Queen or the Manics. Stadium bands like U2, Coldplay, Muse, Foo Fighters etc and acts like Bruce Springsteen just leave me cold and so I suspect I would put them in the over rated catagory. Find stuff like Ed Sheeran and Adele completely nondescript and boring. Also I never quite got what the fuss was about bands like the stone roses. As for Oasis the first two Albums were world class and superb, the rest were just dross.

I’m more a dance music fan, electronic music, to that end I have followed the pet shop boys since they appeared in the 80s. I would say they are massively under rated - they have produced some quality songwriting over the years and some perfect pop records (West End Girls, It’s a Sin). They are still prolific and producing high quality albums every few years. They constantly keep themselves relevant by working with new contemporary producers and remixers - and if anyone is interested they’ve just remixed a Paul Weller track. Plus you usually get new reinterpretations of their old songs when they go on tour.

So there you go, Pet Shop Boys are under-rated. And if your worried about the hamster thing in the band name I’m not convinced its true.

Overrated (as in the music media hype them up every time they post a clip on Instagram)

Radiohead - clearly influential band, but it would be nice if they looked like they were at least enjoying it
Billie Eillish - I don't think she's rubbish, I've just not heard anything from her that justifies the hype or is different to Lady GaGa/Gwen Stefani/Lorde etc
The Stone Roses - Living in Manchester, their 'vibe' is rammed down your throat in every indie bar. They were absolutely magic in the early 90's but time moves on, and there's been much better bands from Manchester since then that don't even get a look-in on the hero worship
The National - droning Radiohead rip-offs
Mumford and Sons - remember that summer when everyone went round in waistcoats and rolled up trousers pretending to like craft cider. Urggh.

Underrated
Oasis - You can hate the brothers, but I doubt there has been another British band in the past 30 years that has encouraged more people to pick up guitars and start playing (which, yeah, might be a sin in itself) and their 94-96 period wipes the floor with other bands from the era.

I get the feeling so many people put Coldplay because they feel it's cool and edgy thing to do.
No its just their music is so bland and beige.
