Context is everything when we judge our defence, midfield, forwards, goalkeepers.
Just to put our defensive and scoring records in some kind of framework for last season - its important to separate out the facts.
* When Carrick took charge - after 17 League games - we had conceded 21 goals and scored 19 [That included the 4 goals against Wigan]!
* In the remaining 29 games Boro conceded 35, but scored 65
* If we applied that scoring rate over the whole season - we would have scored 103 goals and conceded 55.
* Bearing those figures in mind - its astonishing the results Carrick and his staff achieved - with us finishing with the 3rd highest goal - difference [+28] behind Sheffield United [+34] and Burnley [+52]
Hopefully, that should provide some perspective.
For the record:
* We were the 3rd highest goal scorers at home [46] behind Sheffield United [47] and Burnley [49].
* Away - we were joint top goal scorers with Burnley [38].
