Fry and McNair contracts

Plenty of talk about Akpom but these are both out of contract next summer. Are we looking to renew? If not, are we open to offers for one or either this summer?

Howson, Crooks, Bola (might have an option) also out of contract at the end of the season.
For me:

- Howson, continue with the year by year contract offers, at his age, if his legs don't go he stays and he'll take it.
- Crooks, doesn't fit a Carrick system in midfield, not good enough at CF. Time to sell. With his goalscoring record for us (17 goals in 58 starts, 1 in 3.5 games) then I suspect someone will pay 2-2.5m and that will be good business for us, them and him.
- Bola : League One level player. Sell for 500k
- McNair - as others have said Jack of all trades, master of none. He was our third best CB in a side that shipped too many goals. He's been here too long now, hasn't really kicked on, played pretty well in a back 3, but not good enough in a 2, or in midfield. I know Stoke have been interested in the past, could be a 3m target for someone like them.
- Fry - Would like him to get fit and sign a 12 month extension, ideally. If not sell, could get a good fee of over 7m for him which could fund other signings.

I think Coulson has 12 months left too, I would sell for whatever we can get 300-500k

Bring back Ramsey and Archer for another season especially with Villa signing Tielmans and looking at Oxlade Chamberlain.
AOC could definitely free Ramsay up to go back out on loan, in fact, I really think it is the best thing for him, he needs the game time and to physically adapt to avoid injuries in future.

I can’t understand why Carrick wouldn’t want both
Because of the financial situation we are in?

I don't know, and have no problem with both staying but I find it odd how focused a lot of the fanbase seem on keeping everyone. Surely the idea is to manage the squad as a whole? We might lose someone we would ideally like to keep, but the decision to sell is better for the greater good of the club.

We could possibly lose both for nothing next year finishing 7th, we could possibly possibly sell one (Paddy is one of our higher earners I believe) and sign a cheaper replacement the new and improved scouting department has identified, who is an upgrade, we finish 5th and win the play-offs.

That is Scott's remit surely, to wheel and deal and bring the right mix of coaches, scouts and players to build a squad to win promotion, whilst balancing the books a lot better than we have managed since relegation. That balancing should include cashing in 'assets' rather than losing them for nothing if we have to.

Our defence isn't great we concede more than we should, there's no great aggression or that desperation / ruthlessness to get a clean sheet like some players have. Most of them lack the commitment to get on the end of set pieces regularly and cause the opposition problems in their box. All of them see pretty 'nice' I doubt many opposition strikers will be worried about being picked up and marked / battling with any of them.

Lenihan is a good all rounder. Fry has weaknesses in passing and playing out, he isn't particularly aggressive or powerful despite his size. Paddy isn't a natural centre back, but can do a job and aids us building from the back as he is so comfortable on the ball and has a good range of passing.

We could do with a big, dominant centre half to partner Lenihan, good fitness record, some pace, power and aggression, decent feet and a set piece threat.

We sold Tav as he was in his last year last season.

Other than Muniz, and possibly Hoppe all of the signings last season offered improvements to the overall squad.

We need to trust the decisions will be made to do the same again IMO.

Fry is the best CB in the champo. He stays.

Paddy is brilliant until he switches off for a split second, bad things happen in that split second. Would love him to stay but I think he will move on to be a guaranteed starter somewhere.

Fry was left out on numerous occasions when he was fit which he won't have been happy about.
He holds a stronger hand now and is playing a waiting game for on an offer from a PL club. It will give him a route out, or leverage to improve his contract. I reckon he will leave.

Coulson signed a new deal

Fry and McNair - keep one sell one. Fry is the better defender but McNair is more adaptable. May depend on the medical staff's perspective about whether Clarke will be back.
Bola - clearly lined up to sell. Coulson seems to be his replacement.
Dijksteel - also clearly lined up to go. New kid from Man City may be given a chance to claim the place as Smith's understudy.
Crooks - odd one. Great player to have around but hard to see him being offered a new contract. I can see him being sold if the right offer comes in.
Howson - clearly going to start the season as first choice. No worries about him not giving 100% while his contract runs down.

bit longer, 2 years with an option. still a bit of a surprise for me this unless Woody has convinced Carrick he can play the Giles role

Wow thought it was just a year. So clearly woody sees Coulson as his personal project that he believes will come good. But, he’s 24 and never looked good enough for this level, so far

Yes, so he’s back to 12 months then out of contract. I think he’ll be given pre-season but sold before the window closes
Wouldn't surprise me if Coulson is given an opportunity to get back into the first team picture. As we know Woody is a massive fan and that will have no doubt played a part in him getting the contract extension. I was very impressed with him when he first broke into the first team under Woody. He's got some fantastic attributes but definitely needs to brush up on a few aspects of his game. Let's hope with Carrick giving him plenty of encouragement and confidence he can do that.

Coulson will deffo be in pre season, maybe he’s matured and can show more than he has previously, he is a technical player, which suits Carrick. But I think he’ll fall short of what’s needed..certainly as a starter

I thought maybe it meant Bola was leaving and he's cheap squad cover for LB & LM.

Keep both Fry and Paddy as both are excellent Championship players and would be welcomed into any other squad in this division.
