Fry and McNair contracts

Plenty of talk about Akpom but these are both out of contract next summer. Are we looking to renew? If not, are we open to offers for one or either this summer?

Howson, Crooks, Bola (might have an option) also out of contract at the end of the season.

Yeah, it’s an important next 6 weeks…for these kinds of decisions because they squad needs tweaks/modest improvement and not a full blown transition….

Modest improvement means trying to bring Archer back and hopefully Ramsey now that villa have bought Tielamans 😃
A keeper if Steffen ain’t coming back,sorting out Giles and either a replacement for mowatt or bring him back for a bit more of a chance when that chance arrives 🤷‍♂️
 
I think one of them will likely go, given the choice of keep Fry over McNair. Fry was a huge miss in the end of season run in. I think we’d of kept the pressure up on Sheff utd to the final day if he had stayed fit and Howson hadn’t picked up that injury.
 
McNair finished the season strongly, Fry can not stay fit for whatever reason but when he does he’s obviously a solid defender. I personally think one may be sold and who ever isn’t sold will be a back up, we should sign someone to partner Lenihan, preferably someone with a good injury record.

Imagine McNair is more likely to leave than Fry.
 
I am hoping there is some sort of plan as every closed season there appears to be 5 or 6 out of contract at the minute of players that were integral to the team the previous season. If an offer came in and a replacement was lined up I would probably sell one of them. Whilst you defend from the front in our system we did ship a lot of goals and maybe a new face might help in that regard.
 
I think modest tweaks downplays our requirements, there is no reason to suggest any of our 6 loanees will come back and they all need replacing as only muniz wasn’t a regular in our first XI never mind the squad. Throw in a Jonny howson replacement which we’ve needed for the last 2 summers and it’s a massive rebuild

I don’t get this ; ‘one of fry or McNair will likely leave’
Why ?
Both look highly respected by Carrick and rightly so, both offer different positives and I prefer Fry but on a given day against a certain kind of side I’d prefer McNair given his ability to contribute in midfield bringing the ball out.
I can’t understand why Carrick wouldn’t want both and look to offload the ghost that is Clarke (!) and go get a 4th CH who will push the others to be better!

I think we will sign someone to partner Lenihan, McNair and Fry are good but not totally dependable ( for different reasons) in my opinion. Fry is good enough but he is prone to injuries and doesn’t play enough games. McNair normally very good with his injury record but his form fluctuates too much for me.

If we both to keep both of them then great but I would still sign someone to compete with them and hopefully partner Lenihan.

Clarke has had a bad bad injury but he’s got a pre season now to get himself sorted working under a different manager is a system more likely to suit him. Not writing him off yet.

I can see Fry leaving tbh, given his contract situation and I think plenty would still be interested in him. McNair would be more willing to take a new deal I think, without needing to break the bank.
 
I always assumed Fry would join a PL club at some point if we weren't promoted but his injury record has to be a concern. 34, 36, 32, 33, 23 league games he's played in the last 5 seasons. Though less games in the PL.
 
McNair jack of all trades master of none can go for me hugely overated. I am assuming hes one of the highest earners replace with a better centre back on lesser money. Fry has been unlucky with injuries when hes 100 percent fit he is one of top centrebacks in the championship so i would like him stay
 
The defence was at times a shambles last season so I’m hoping for 2 new CBs, and a right back. Coulson could do us a big favour by showing us he’s matured into a decent LB. As for Paddy I’m of the opinion that he should be sold. As for Fry it’s a tough choice as he’s top class when he’s fit.

Is this a definite source you can confirm or just hearsay?
Karl Darlow from Newcastle would be a great alternative to Stefan.
The new signing Agyemang from Man City could easily be our new Right Back.
Buy Giles for 4 million, or Ryan Manning on a free from Swansea.
Another CB to cover for Fry/Lenihan.
A midfielder to cover for Howson/Hackney buy or loan depending on price.
Bring back Ramsey and Archer for another season especially with Villa signing Tielmans and looking at Oxlade Chamberlain.
Wouldn’t be surprised to see some of these possibly sold, Jones, Crooks, Hoppe, Dijksteel and Bola to generate funds for Giles and a midfielder.
