Fry avoiding criticism

Maybe. I bumped into him when he was doing some school outreach and he wasn't the brightest button. That said, I think he makes a competent centre half when partnered with a vocal partner who has a bit of pace. I just wouldn't bother send him up for set pieces
Didn't he win the penalty tonight from a set piece?

It’s his job to look competent when faced up to an attacker!
Howson and McNair let Willock run the show. Johansen was strolling around, Chair was on the ball. Boro had absolutely nothing in the middle of the field and allowed them to do it. It’s actually a trait of us under Warnock - we just let the opposition enjoy the ball. It’s almost as if we have no interest in it unless one of our wingers has it.

Good players will pick you apart. The two central defenders were left exposed tonight.

Exactly, when a defender is exposed against 2/3 men then there is normally only one winner. Unless you are an outstanding 1 on 1 defender like Van Dijk you will struggle. We got beat tonight because of Howson and McNair and Warnocks inability to see the problems. Nothing to do with Hall and Fry for me although they weren’t at their best either.

Fry does the simple things well. Looks to pass as soon as he gets possession - maybe that is what he is told to do!
I agree that he needs to play alongside a vocal, strong centre half. Ayala seemed to give him confidence, its still early in the Hall/Fry partnership considering Halls injury last year so its going to get better as they play more games together.

Genuinely wasn’t being a smart **** though, was just sticking up for a player who got called thick and no football brain. I don’t see that with Fry at all. He’s just better on the right side than he is on the left.
You questioned a posters emotional state for comments on a players performance. Play the ball not the man. We’re all entitled to an opinion whether you agree or not 👍🏼

Because he questions a players intelligence after one shaky performance. Thought it was a bit knee jerk and I still do.

Absolutely agree, I can see Morsy coming back into the side on the back of tonight. It’s clear we need to protect the centre halves as much as we can. That of course may shackle our attacking somewhat.

Thought you said it doesn't matter which side Fry and Hall play on.

Who won the penalty for attacking the ball on Wednesday?
More fool the lad who pulled him back, it would have been a soft header... All homes aside, look at how many goals he's scored to games played and it's terrible for a lad his size. You could guarantee Ayala would get you 4 or 5 goals a season and that's what fry should be doing for us.

It’s interesting, reading threads like this. Fry gets quite a lot of stick and yet we keep seeing him linked with Premier League clubs. Every manager that comes into Boro singles him out as being a very important player. It sort of reminds me of Joe Bennett in some ways. He was hammered on here for months on end before moving on to the Premier League with Villa and then playing for some good clubs and managers. 350 or so senior games, none below the Championship. Andrew Taylor used to get it. These lads left us for clubs above us in the table at the time, or the division above in some cases. Downing gets it(or used to).

Look at the list of managers who’ve bought, picked and praised these lads. All academy players. We should be enjoying the lads our youth set-up produces, not slating them left, right and centre.

Do people not make the connection that Fry’s best form comes when the team in front of him is settled? When the midfield is doing its job properly? He was excellent last season until his injury. By the time he came back the wheels had come off and the consistency in both the form of others and team selection wasn’t there any more. He was excellent under Pulis.

I just get the impression that people have unrealistic expectations. We’ve produced a good defender. Just because Manchester United or Chelsea don’t want him doesn’t mean he’s sh*t. He’s more than good enough for Boro and when he does move on it’ll probably be to a club higher up than us. When he is gone we’ll wish we had him back while we start the process all over again with Nathan Wood.

Poor start to the season imo. Shocking tonight and we’re seeing VERY LITTLE improvement in his game. He’s stagnated in his development. Too lightweight and gave far too much space quality players which cost us.

if we’re seriously going to challenge this season then both CBs need to drastically update their game along with our GK. 5 goals conceded already!
And 5 scored - 3 games gone misery

Agree . Fry is one of a few of our current players who are capable of being in a promotion winning team. He is still young for a centre half and has the potential to play in the Premier League. I am not saying he's the finished article but we have a lot more problems elsewhere on the pitch without singling him out.
