Gary Lineker being reined in

The BBC need to speak to HIM about being unbiased.
He doesn't need to be unbias, he isn't a BBC employee, he isn't involved in any political BBC broadcasts either, his personal life is his own and he can say what he pleases as long as it doesn't bring the BBC reputation into disrepute by association.....the BBC need no help with that, in fact it's Fiona BRuce that should be sanctioned.

I don’t disagree. I’m just making the point that he usually receives pelters on here, except when he tweets something about the government. It’s almost as if people are happy to see him have a big profile as long as he agrees with them.
His big profile is on his personal twitter, it's nothing to do with the BBC. If people react to it, it's because it either reflects their feelings or grates on them.

Punching up to the powers that be should always be sacrosanct, punching down is where caution is required. Lineker always punches up

His big profile is on his personal twitter, it's nothing to do with the BBC. The BBC regularly platform people like nigel farage without a problem.
If he hadn’t been fronting MOTD for 25 years he’d have a profile as big as Chris Waddle’s now.

I don’t think Farage has been on QT for over 3 years btw.

He had a symbiotic relationship they paid him and he did a good job for them. He doesn't owe the BBC political favours and silence in return for the air time he has had.

He is free to speak his mind and fight whatever causes he chooses and it's none of the BBCs business as long as it doesn't bring the BBC into disrepute.

Pretty much everyone will have a social media policy in their contract, whatever line of work you are in. If you do anything on social media that the company deems to be controversial (or that people might think they are acting in an official capacity and that is the views of the organisation) then there will be reprimands.

I don't always agree with Lineker speaking out and at times he can be hypocritical when talking about the wealth of others when being a tax dodger etc but in the main he's a public figure expressing his views like anyone else. What he is saying isn't illegal and he should be free to comment on anything which is a public discussion. He's a football presenter so he works on the media side of things, not the news, so it is different rules anyway because he doesn't need political access so isn't open to being influenced.
Lineker doesn't have a regular employee's contract with the BBC, so I'd be reluctant to assume he has necessarily signed up for any restrictions on his social media use.

Not saying he does. I’m just making the point that he gets pelters on here for the profile the BBC has helped him grow, until he uses that profile to criticise the government. I just think its interesting/notable.

Lineker has been expressing political opinions for years. Funny how the tory appointed head of the BBC didn't object when he was slating Corbyn to his huge following. ( and I'm not getting into that debate BTW, just pointing out the hypocrisy of the BBC)

To be clear the DG has changed since then.

He’s just pointing out how we should take more notice of how the power was achieved then which allowed them to do what we are all aware of later.
She literally said up to a Billion refugees could end up here. Just for a few poxy votes in May.
Or is it.
Rise of the Nazis BBC iplayer
Michael Rosen. The children’s author.
Who’s uncles he never met…together with their families and thousands of others were on the
Drancy transports from Paris to Auschwitz. None of his family survived.

I sometimes fear that
people think that fascism arrives in fancy dress
worn by grotesques and monsters
as played out in endless re-runs of the Nazis.

Fascism arrives as your friend.
It will restore your honour,
make you feel proud,
protect your house,
give you a job,
clean up the neighbourhood,
remind you of how great you once were,
clear out the venal and the corrupt,
remove anything you feel is unlike you...

It doesn't walk in saying,
"Our program means militias, mass imprisonments, transportations, war and persecution."

Yeah, but the thing is the things you cite above that are sold to voters don’t *always* result in folk being sent to the gas chambers. I can’t stand this government or it’s immigration policy but I don’t think the casual use of the term “Nazi” online (as was used about Starmer on the other thread!) is helpful either.

I didn’t use the the word Nazis, casually, or otherwise in my post. Only to point to a BBC documentary series. Try replying to what is written rather than something that it doesn’t contain.

I was making a general point (and I did reference the other thread). You did talk about fascism. No need to get all confrontational though.
