Gary Lineker being reined in

Has Farage been on the BBC though?

And he DOES present MotD, so what's your point?
Farage hasn't been on the BBC at all in recent memory, certainly not that I can think of?

Lineker does present MOTD. I don't have a single point to make, just that Lineker is regularly criticised on here for being sh1te at his job, overpaid, and an example of BBC incompetence etc, who are regularly criticised for their impartiality. I just think its interesting how when Lineker uses (exploits?) the platform the BBC has given him to say something that isn't impartial (not that it bothers me) he is suddenly a hero of the board. I'm not actually sure everyone really wants impartiality.

I quite Lineker and agree with a lot of his views, I'm not criticising him. I also don't think he is sh1te at his job, or comparatively overpaid (he earns way more from BT for less work). He has 8.7m followers on Twitter largely because he has been fronting MOTD on the 'right wing' BBC for 25 years though, was what I was saying.

what allegiance has he shown: He's pointed out that fascist rhetoric is fascist rhetoric. No allegiance, just a statement of facts as he sees them.
I was referring to BoroMart's post about 'BBC staff' and how they don't need to remain impartial unless they work in News. I was just suggesting that they should try to remain impartial, not specifically Lineker who as noted isn't on staff.

That doesn't actually address the point I've brought up. Which is that he has shown no "allegiance" Which are your exact words

"I would suggest BBC staff should refrain from showing allegiance."

This was not directly aimed at Lineker or the OP. It was a general comment about something another poster said.

Very weasel words to get round the fact you seem personally upset by what Lineker has said. Why would that be?

I'm not personally upset by it, what makes you think I am? I am more upset by the constant criticism he gets on here for being paid what is a fairly standard salary in his line of work for someone of his profile.

Seems on odd place to bring that up IF that is your true intention. To try and derail a thread were we talk about a public figure speaking out against the fascisim of the government. if you really are jus concerned about his salary, there would have been a better platform than this. It seems like you are upset about what he said. I can't imagine why

Well, do you think I am a Tory voter or something? Read my views on the 'stop the boats' thread. What makes you think I am upset by Lineker's views?

I don't think a thread about Gary Lineker is an odd place to air my views about Gary Lineker, or specifically the board's consensus view of Gary Lineker or indeed the BBC as a whole.

I found it odd that you mentioned Lineker's wage and then stated he normally gets pelters about it. Is that what you were hoping would happen here? It is obvious you don't like the man and have had little digs at him throughout the thread.

I think you are better off leaving it now mate.

I don't dislike the man at all! I've met him 6 or 7 times and worked with him once or twice. He's a really nice bloke. Where are the digs?

Even if I thought he shouldn't criticise the government due to his role with the BBC (and I haven't said that) it wouldn't automatically mean I disliked him. Its most of this board who usually dislikes him, until he says something they agree with.

I've got loads of time for Lineker and his social commentary is rarely misplaced in my view.

I know the BBC is apolitical, or at least it's meant to be, but very often his views are not primarily political, rather they have a political aspect within a wider humanitarian issue.

I'm liking the 'BBC Staff' should not show allegiances discussion......

Their Chairman:
has donated more than £400k to the Tory Party
has donated £20k to a right wing think tank
brokered an 800k loan for the ex PM - Johnson

The current Director General is a former Conservative Party Politician

It starts from at the top doesn't it?

100%. Sharp should have resigned weeks ago.

The DG was a Tory councillor 30 years ago. I don't think that automatically should exclude him from being able to apply. Its hard to find people as seemingly neutral as Tony Hall was. 30 years is also a very long time.
