Great British Menu - Plant Based Chef

There is no scientific evidence to support an alkaline diet. It's another fad diet by someone selling a book that does nothing but makes you think about what you are eating (which is a good thing). If you switch to healthy food, whether it is acidic or alkaline, it will be good for you.

Anecdotal evidence is not reliable.

Medicine has come a long way and cancer survival rates are getting better all the time but it is because of medicine, not diet. Looking after yourself, eating healthily and exercising is definitely recommended but restricting yourself to a specific diet with no supporting evidence is unnecessary.
‘ Eating healthy’
What does that entail though ?
It’s just a saying.
I believe dairy (animal milk especially) and it’s enzymes and antibiotics fed to cows etc to avoid infection are consumed by people unknowingly and god only knows how this effects people….some people must have systems that are more robust than others but the others are developing cancers that are difficult to treat.
That’s just one example of a food stuff that’s widely misunderstood as being good for us.
On balance I think it’s very unsafe imho

Eating healthy means consuming the correct amount of calories and getting the nutrients needed.

It really doesn't matter what you believe. We have science so we don't have to just believe. We can trust in facts. Milk is perfectly safe to drink for the 99% of people that aren't allergic and even those that are intolerant of it can consume it but it will give them temporary stomach issues. There is nothing in the "enzymes and antibiotics" that cause harm. The problem with overexposure to antibiotics is that bacteria becomes resistant so antibiotics won't work in the future. It doesn't affect the person consuming it.

Sounds like you make a living from the dairy industry or products that come from animals.
The truth is though, that all the nutrients we need are in plant based products which is not widely known and most if not all of the great flavours come from products that are plant based so no need for animal based products whatsoever - if we were just more imaginative we could create a different path and it would transform the health of people

Haha. No, not at all. I work in a hospital. I hope there are no animal products coming out of there.

Yes. I don't disagree that you can have a plant based diet. I said there is no evidence that there are health benefits from the "alkaline diet". You can meet the required nutrients whatever way you want whether that is from milk, meat or plants. A healthy diet doesn't have to exclude anything, it can, but it doesn't have to.

There have been plenty of studies done by universities Demonstrating the benefits of a plant-based diet on health
But the dairy and meat industry lobbyists, pay other university professors heavy sums to produce alternative reports dismissing plant based products as a lifestyle because they are desperately trying to protect their business.

these conflicting reports, just confuse people which is exactly what the dairy and meat industry want to do.
Think about this, back in the 60s 50s we ate significantly less in terms of ultra processed food.
More recently in the 80s 90s and beyond processed foods has become the norm or a big part of peoples diet on a daily basis and cancers have gone through the roof.
You are what you eat and we’ve all been sleepwalked in to this eating norm,
Big pharmaceutical companies benefit massively from illnesses and government benefit greatly from the taxes from big pharmaceutical companies, and from the meat and dairy industries.
So it’s not in the government interest to start impacting on all that tax revenue, just so they can make people more healthy. See this conspiracy ?
It’s a vicious circle.

Remember that tin foil hat has to be shiny side out or it won't work. You make good points but leave the nonsense conspiracy stuff out.

For anyone reading with an active braincell, there is no grand conspiracy to get us all to eat dairy or meat to generate drug revenue. If there is a danger to your health it is more likely to be from ultra processed food and that can be plant based just as easily as meat or dairy.

That's not how science works. You've delved into the anti-science conspiracy theory world now.

Agree that the last bit is a stretch but
There has been and still is a massive lobby for dairy and meat consumption

Kirk went on to get his plant based desert at the menu
Then was announced the winner for the best dish by the guests

Some achievement
Restaurant not open yet but he has an on line cook school

The world would be a far better place if the majority of people went vegan and some of the meat substitutes are now really good. However I think there's been a bit of confusion about how healthy meat substitutes are, I think some people wrongly assume that all plant based = healthy when in actual fact a lot of the fake meats are heavily processed.

That's not pointing the finger at anyone on this thread its more about how supermarkets are marketing processed vegan food as healthy when in fact its far from it.

I am often considering this about meat substitutes, and aware of the risks.

However, they have to be better for your cholesterol don’t they, Shirley?

Kirk did very well - I can't see his restaurant taking long to open after that result.
Its sad the series has come to an end.

BTW - does anyone . know if Michael O'Hare is a boro fan?

This is an update on him from wiki:

O'Hare became Creative Director of GG Hospitality, a company created by ex-professional footballers Ryan Giggs and Gary Neville.[12] The company, along with O'Hare, opened a 'space-age Asian' restaurant called The Rabbit in the Moon at the National Football Museum in Manchester on 3 January 2017.[13][14] O'Hare is also due to set up a fine dining restaurant – The Man Who Fell To Earth, and a less formal restaurant called Are Friends Electric within a new Manchester hotel at the Manchester Stock Exchange owned by GG Hospitality.[7][15]

In October 2023, O'Hare closed The Man Behind the Curtain, and opened a new restaurant called Psycho Sandbar in early 2024.[16][17]
