How long does the disappointment last?

Again it’s an age thing I think. For me it is anyway. I used to hate losing in my teens and 20s and relegation was tortuous in 1982. The League Cup Final was really bad in 1997 but another final came soon after so got over it quickly. As a Boro fan we have had more disappointments than triumphs but in later years they don’t seem as important as they once was. Yes was down a bit on Wednesday evening but feel ok now especially as Coventry were the better team on the night and got their deserved result. There are so many other things in life to pick you up.

I was disappointed on the night. Nervous as hell during the game and hugely invested emotionally throughout the season.

The whole Sunderland play off final had me anxious for a few months because it would have made the whole experience edgy. Once they got knocked out I was much more relaxed and thought we’d get through to the final.

As the game went on I had the feeling it wasn’t gonna be our night. I think that makes it easier than a late winner from the opposition.

In the end I wasn’t as disappointed as I’d expected. I think there are a few factors at play:

1) There was still another game to play to get promoted
2) It was at home. Traveling to an away game takes more effort and money. Losing at Wembley is on another level. Losing there is hard to take.
3) I’m 43 now. Seen it all before. We will get another chance.
4) Got two very young kids. Probably puts things in perspective for me.
5) I actually enjoy the Championship more than the Premier. If we go up we just get thumped every other week.

When walking out the ground I heard some dad say to his young lad ‘don’t worry son, we’ll be in Dubai in two weeks time’… at that moment I was incredibly jealous.

Got home and said to the wife we need to book a holiday between now and August, started looking tonight, she fancies Sweden… how to kick a man when he’s down.

Do you think they are going that because getting beat wasn’t enough sadness and disappointment

Well Wednesday night after the game I was pretty disappointed.
Yesterday was worse, couldn't bring myself to play FM or FIFA or talk about Football but then I was getting a constant stream of messages about Sheffield Wednesday Vs Peterborough so I put it on.

After watching that I realised why I love the EFL and the drama it brings, yes we've missed out this year but we have one of the best young English managers, a good recruitment team, a chairman who clearly still wants success and the nucleus of a team to go one better next year.

I'm looking forward to next season, I think when the rumours start to flow and the transfers start the disappointment will fade.
Only one month and three days until the fixtures come out.

However bad you feel now it is nothing compared to how you would have felt if we had been beat at Wembley.

Although I'm over it now after the defeat by Norwich I was flat for weeks, and I still think of it now.

I was over it the second I got out the ground.

How I consoled myself was, "Well they or Luton are probably going to get battered every week in the prem, and they will be back down here, with us ahead of them.". Was a bit petty, but it worked.

Would have been even too early for us to go up, and we're a lot better prepped than Luton or Cov, and maybe even Burnley and Sheff Utd too, in some aspects.

We need a stronger squad of our own based players, and for a couple to have a year or so extra development I think. We won't struggle to get good loans, and Carrick will interest a lot of potential buys and we'll get more choice over the summer.

My only worry is when I look at who is coming down, but hopefully, they're all skint/ badly prepared financially, as none of them will have expected to be coming down.

Sweden is great for a holiday. I have family and visit often. Nice cities and fantastic country side. Gets hot in the summer as well

It never ends, that is the beauty of following a sports team. Disappointment is just a short term emotion fixed on a constant cycle mixed in with bitterness, euphoria, anger and excitement.

I find it is easier to accept these things when we acknowledge that football is a beautiful accompaniment to healthy lifestyle and people should not get as hung up on it as they do.

Try to tell myself I'm over it and I'm ok most the day but keep getting flashbacks causing me to give out a massive sigh. Chasing promotion is intoxicating (like being in love) and to have it disappear with one blow of the ref's whistle is a jolt and life suddenly feels much more mundane. I think I'll be better when the season finishes and can just enjoy summer but at the moment the Premier League games and (worst of all) next week's play-off final are just dragging out the agony and thoughts of what might have been.

About 5 mins its a game of football. We didnt make the final, we were nowhere near automatics, we were 4th bottom when Carrick took over

Now had we lost to Luton at Wembley ...

I am hoping I get over it by August. I will play some cricket, get out on my bike, watch the F1 and some walking in the Lakes,
I think it will take me a long time. 😒
Have fun, I think there maybe a typo in your post btw. Oh, and don’t forget to pack tissues. 😉 🤣

Disappointment is always going to be a big part of 99% of most football fans lives.
It's certainly easier to get over the older you are.

Soon as the ref blew the final whistle I was over it. We made a better fist of it this season than last, saw some cracking games. I am positive for next season but we have to buy well to move forward. I was sort of prepared for a loss tbh with a few players out with injury and Akpom got caught early which impacted his game. At 65 I try to look for the positives. UTB
