Middlesbrough are set to offer Jonny Howson a new contract, with his current deal expiring this summer. Howson was named the club's Player of the Year this season as he captained Boro to a seventh-placed finish in the Championship.

Boro ultimately suffered final-day heartbreak at Preston North End in their quest for a spot on the play-offs, but Howson was the man of the match from a Boro perspective as far as his manager was concerned. And as Wilder now turns towards his summer rebuild, promising big changes to the squad this summer, one player he noted he was keen to keep was his skipper.

Wilder said of the 33-year-old's future: "I think Jonny Howson was one player I can rely on from a mentality point of view and today he looked at home and comfortable in the game. He was a leader today and by far our best performer.

"We’ve not published our retained list, but I should imagine, with the impact that you’ve seen from him this season, he’s been our best player, so I think there is a good opportunity that we might be offering him a new contract."

Defeat at Preston brought to an end Howson's fifth season at the club. He is last surviving member of Boro's disastrous summer 2017 transfer window under Garry Monk, but has been the one to justify his signing in that time and last season agreed to a paycut to ensure he stayed at Boro this term.

As Wilder looked ahead after Preston and the rebuild over the summer, he promised to be ruthless as he aimed to build a squad that could deliver promotion for the Boro fans who he described as superb. But Howson, despite turning 34 this month, is one player Wilder absolutely wants on the journey with him.

Problem is hes not good enough. Took him how many years to show up and now hes not fit enough. Seems a good bloke but if u want to get promoted hes not the one.

See bamba, mcnair, crooks, bola, coburn, taylor
Not fit enough? You have to be kidding, right?

Howson is one of the fittest at the club, but he's been a permanent fixture in a position that demands high miles per game.

Anyone would be jaded after the games he's played, buy he was still our best player today.

He didn't get beat for pace on the second goal against a youngster. It was actually technically poor by Jones. Hate to say that but it was the case

Majorly disappointed in that key second goal defending mistake from Jones. His improving defensive play had been the better part of his game of late.

Howson has no pace cant get across the pitch to sweep up, doesnt have the fitness to do that. Yeah hes player of the season for a team that finished 7th. We need better. We need athletic, powerful players who can control a game.

We got out muscles by preston today yeah Johnny was decent amongst a **** team but it's a key area we need to be better in.

Maybe so, but there’s still a place for him in the team. Don’t forget we’ve been two down all season

I haven't seen any of the game @HundredRoom but I'll take your word for it. What Howson lacks in pace he makes up for it in good positional sense.

Do you think in a wilder high press team you can get away with howson in a holding midfield position looking for promotion?
