Another twist to the play-offs.
Never ending agony and ecstacy.

The scheduling powers that be have saved one of the best fixtures until last as Monday sees two promotion hopefuls come head-to-head for the 28th time. Huddersfield Town are winless in five meetings against Luton Town (D3, L2), but will have been buoyed by a 1-0 win over Hull which ended a four-game winless run last time out, even though manager Carlos Corberán “wished it had come sooner”.

Never mind the timing of the win, the important thing for Huddersfield is that they are the only side in the play-off positions ahead of the round that cannot be caught this round. The ‘Terriers’ have kept their promotion fate in their own hands by losing a league-low two games across the last 20 rounds (W10, D8), largely attributed to their young manager Corberán (39), as there are no younger bosses amongst the 92 clubs in a higher position than Huddersfield.

Looking to spoil the party are another overachieving side, Luton, who are currently on a run of ten scoring Championship games (W6, D2, L2), their longest such streak since 2006! It was disappointment last time out though for the ‘Hatters’, as boss Nathan Jones said his side were “nowhere near their best” after conceding an 87th-minute equaliser at Peterborough.

That result did at least extend their unbeaten run of Championship away games to three (W2, D1), their joint-best run of the campaign. One more unbeaten road trip would be their first run of 4+ away league games unbeaten in one season since a run of five to end the 2019/20 campaign, a run which interestingly included a 2-0 win here at the John Smith’s Stadium!

Players to watch: Huddersfield’s only two victories since the start of March saw Harry Toffolo contribute to the final goal of the game (G1, A1), whilst Luton’s top league scorer Elijah Adebayo (G15) has contributed to three goals across their last three away games (G2, A1).

Hot stat: Luton have failed to win six of their last eight games played on a Monday (W2, D2, L4).

I guess we need a draw really. Especially since we chucked 3 points in the bin against Hull.

Edit: Either that or a Huddersfield win. I think Huddersfield have the easier run in of the two, so more likely to finish higher anyway.

A draw is probably best. Although Huddersfield win if not.

Still raging about Saturday. Also not overly looking forward to this coming weekend. Two hard games on the bank of an awful performance.

A draw is the best result, if not I'd say Luton win so we can go into the Huddersfield game with a chance of levelling up or getting close with our game in hand

Don't really mind too much. There is only 1 point between them so a draw probably suits us best. We could and probably should catch either with our run in.

I was considering the pub to watch this one tonight. The problem is, I have no idea what I want to happen, so whatever the result do I celebrate or drown my sorrows. Tough one.

It all depends on us winning our game in hand either way.

The last thing we want is a Luton win though as it puts them both more than one result ahead of us.

If Huddersfield win, we'll struggle to overtake them even if we beat them, but it keeps Luton within touching distance and means a solid win against Cardiff would see us overtaking them if we both won all the other games in between, and they play Nottingham Forest next which I'd bet they'll lose comfortably.

A draw means we can overtake Huddersfield if we win all our remaining games and still have a good chance of overtaking Luton.

Thanks for the analysis tc. They're are lots of points to play for and all teams will drop points. Let's hope Saturday was a kick up the backside and Jones is back for friday

Not sure I could make a case for any result. End of the day, we need to win at least 4 out of 6 left, maybe 5.

Whatever happens we gain an opportunity to catch one or both

I think it's impossible to know what the best result is. Lots are saying a draw, which makes sense, but they'd both probably consider it a decent point

Preview: Huddersfield Town vs. Luton Town - prediction, team news, lineups

By Darren Plant, Senior Reporter | 2d

Huddersfield Town and Luton Town will square off on Monday evening with just one point separating the promotion-chasing clubs in the Championship standings.
Given the recent inconsistency of both teams, they head into the fixture at the John Smith's Stadium desperately requiring three points to maintain some distance between themselves and seventh position.

When Huddersfield were on their lengthy unbeaten streak, automatic promotion appeared to be a real possibility, but recent successive defeats have derailed those ambitions unless Bournemouth capitulate during the closing weeks of the campaign.

Nevertheless, after losing to Millwall and the Cherries in convincing fashion, the Terriers were able to bounce back with a much-needed 1-0 victory at Hull City last time out.
Playing the second half with a player advantage certainly helped Huddersfield, but it took a late Harry Toffolo goal to end their three-game winless streak in the Championship.

Despite sitting in third position, however, Carlos Corberan will recognise that his club are not necessarily in a strong position with Nottingham Forest and Middlesbrough possessing games in hands.
Still, Huddersfield will ultimately dictate their own fate, Monday's fixture representing the first of three in succession against direct rivals for the playoffs.

With Forest to follow this game, Luton find themselves in a similar position, and it only increases the stakes ahead of one of the biggest games of their season.
Nathan Jones will have mixed feelings about the last two games, Luton coming from behind on two occasions to draw with Millwall before they let slip a lead against bottom-placed Peterborough United in the closing stages last time out.

Overall though, the Hatters have extended an unbeaten streak to four matches and collecting 11 points from a possible 18, a return which Jones and his squad would probably have taken at this stage of the campaign.

Luton have also netted in their last 10 fixtures in the Championship, Elijah Adebayo recently reaching 15 goals for the campaign and the other strikes being shared around the squad.
Back in October, these two clubs played out a goalless draw at Kenilworth Road in a game which did not suggest that either of these clubs would be occupying third and fourth position ahead of the second weekend in April.

Team News

Huddersfield will be able to call upon Jonathan Hogg and Danny Ward after they missed the Hull game through illness.
Hogg could return to take the place of either Jonathan Russell or Duane Holmes, while leading marksman Ward should get the nod ahead of Jordan Rhodes.

However, Matty Pearson faces up to two months on the sidelines after suffering a knee injury in training.
With Cameron Jerome being withdrawn during the first half in midweek, Harry Cornick appears in line to return to the Luton attack.
While Fred Onyedinma provided an assist against Peterborough, James Bree may revert to right wing-back to accommodate the return of Sonny Bradley in a back three.

Huddersfield Town possible starting lineup:

Luton Town possible starting lineup:

We say: Huddersfield Town 1-1 Luton Town

Regardless of the result on Monday night, both teams will still have five more games to rectify matters if things do not go their way. Nevertheless, this feels like a potentially-pivotal contest, one which both clubs will look to not lose rather than push for all three points if the game is close.

The form table is worrying.

Our last 6 games against the teams in 4th, 9th, 2nd, 3rd, 6th and 7th.

We've had an uncanny knack of playing teams in form all season it feels.
The good thing is that form turns pretty quickly in this league. Well that's what i'm hoping anyway

Luton Town deserve credit for building and sustaining a team on the thinest of financial shoe-strings.
The club has been to hell and back - so let them enjoy the moment - for now!

Certainly happened with Barnsley. They had a good run of form around the time we played them.
