I won't be going to Texas again in a hurry

For me you could sum up whether a country is decent to live in for me on a few factors .

1. Countries where the majority of the population is religious, religion is a harbinger for division and prejudice, and why is its always people with a sh. it life who praise god
2 Countries where inequality is massive
3. Countries without a welfare state or support network

USA is dreadful on all counts.

Having worked in Texas briefly , i was surprised by the depravation, some areas the housing is appalling far worse than any thing in the UK. Like other posters I was also surprised by the number of people who drink and drive. Although the US speak the same language as us(almost) i think we have more in common with our European neighbours
Drink and drive is summed up by "I need my licence for work", at which point it is handed back. Our local news regularly has items about someone on his or her umpteenth DUI or DWI.

Agree with that (y)
They've always been extremely insular and polarised and I think they're getting worse.
Isn't there some crazy stat where well less than half of them have a passport?
Very true, but why on earth would most of them need a passport? Interstate air travel only requires photo ID.

.... and until very recently a US citizen could travel into Canada and Mexico with photo ID only. No passport required. As latino friends in South Texas say (some of whose families predate the US itself), "we didn't cross the border, the border crossed us".

Another mass shooting in California today :(

That's not to mention of course the 100+ that die from guns in the US EVERY DAY
It's not just guns. Last night's news had an item on the rise in assaults in airport terminals and aircraft. A Southwest (female) flight attendant had two teeth knocked out on Sunday. Seems it's the mask mandate that they don't like.....

The UK would fit easily into New York State. The US is massive and most of them have no interest in going anywhere else. We're leaving after more than 20 years and we've seen next to nothing.
To be fair they have a whole continent to explore love the Black Hills, the badlands, Savannah, the Keys, Connecticut, Chesapeake Bay, so many beautiful places to visit and that's before you go to the big cities for a bit more lively fun.

No it won't. The UK is considerably bigger than NY.

The passport anomaly is partly explained by the fact you can travel thousands of miles in the US without a passport. The different regions and states have very different cultures and weather and landscapes and histories. It's far more varied than the UK.

Drive 500 miles in the UK and you are likely to end up in the sea.

That's what I mean about having seen next to nothing..... My son had a trial for college "soccer" in North Carolina years ago and we took the opportunity to drive the "pretty" route down there and we've done a lot of the North East, but there is so much more.
