If there was no speed limits on motorways......

What speed would you be comfortable driving at during perfect conditions in a car?

I think cruise control set to 90mph would be ideal for me.
Driven on the autobahn quite a few times. Set the cruise control at 95 in good conditions and often I was on the inside lane......... mercs and bmw's flew passed me.
Saw an accident thought that had obviously happened at high speed. All that was left was the engine.
Slowed me down a bit.

Depends how busy the road was.

Bout 80 if it was normal, 90 if was quiet.

Off on a tangent, what’s the fastest you’ve traveled on a motorway, >150mph for me (I was the passenger though).

I’ve driven autobahns a lot and generally cruise at about 95 (mph not kph) so assume I’d do the same on motorways if it was legal.

Pretty stupid irresponsible thread.
What speed would you cruise out in a town centre or through a crowded housing estate?
If it's legal, eg the autobahn, I disagree it's irresponsible to drive very fast.
I stick to 30 to 33 in town in the UK unless its a 20 and I drop it down.
Motorways in the UK I drop to 74 on the cruise control but rarely go over 60 in a 60 area.
All depends on the conditions of course.
As I get older I've definetly slowed down a lot... havn't had any points for 20 years from having 9 at one time.

What gap would you give to the car in front?
Cruise control on my car decides on the gap. Set the speed and it does the rest itself. Speeds up to max if there's nobody in front. Matches the speed of the car in front when there is. Keeps me in lane as well.

I think 90 is fine. Wouldn't be in my old car. That used to vibrate if you got to 80. Not very efficient driving at 90 though so 80 is probably better.

If there were no speed limits, there would undoubtedly be more accidents. I am a lot different a driver now than i was in my teens, I think the existing speed limits are sensible bar some in town centres and residential areas that should be lower, where 20-25 should suffice.

I think the existing system of 70 being the limit but not prosecuting people doing 80 is fine. Clear roads then higher speeds are ok as well. It means the majority of people are driving at slightly different speeds and nobody can get away with driving excessively fast for too long. I don't like the Smart Motorways with cameras every 1/4 mile which force everyone to stick to the speed limit because it means more people drive under the limit to avoid being caught and they also think they can do it in whatever lane they like instead of moving over into the inside. Or they speed up and slam on brakes as they pass the camera which is much worse than everyone maintaining steady speeds.

Raising speed limits would just see people going even higher and doing 10 over 80 instead of 10 over 70 so I understand why they don't increase it even if I think 80 is a better limit.

Driving where there might be pedestrians is a completely different scenario and lower limits are definitely better.
