Injury update?

Also a huge leap in comparison to last season when we had 112 appearances missed by players due to injury. A big portion of which were from Matt Clarke joining and then missing 30+ games.

Hackney missed 0 games through injury last season and has missed 13 so far this year.
Forss missed 3 last season and has missed 17 this year
McGree missed 3 last season and has missed 16 this year.

If he's out for the season then it'll be 25 missed and probably another 5 or 6 where he hasn't been fully fit after recovering from injuries. More than half the season out.

One of our best performances of the season was against Villa, not that long ago. Of the 11 starters, 4 are now long-term injured and one has been sold. For all, Carrick's failings, any manager would struggle to deal with that.
Agreed but thats why the squad needs to be stronger.

Injuries are a major factor in our decline from last season along with losing the quality loan players. But for me January transfer window was a disaster, Azaz may come good but only 1 good game to date, Ayling legs have gone, Hall dear me I rather have Coulson from what I have seen from him. But then to sell Crooks and Rogers without replacements (Azaz was signed before Rogers left and does not look a similar player) has been a disaster for us. I do think we wont go down as we will get 12-15 points from somewhere (just law of averages) if we can get Howson and Jones back soon. as they are 2 real key injuries. I would get rid of all the loan players, Greenwood, Hall, O Brien and Ayling. I am hopeful with the money saved on those and McNair along with the transfer monies in that we should be able to get 4-5 quality players in. We need 2 central midfielders who can defend, a better right back and 2 strikers. Hope like hell that Leninian, Hackney and Jones avoid as bad as injury next year and we would have a good squad. Quality rather quantity in the summer, not potential. We have 2-3 assets now.

The thing I noticed on Saturday was we just look so light weight in midfield and attack. Rogers and Crooks at least had some physical presence about them, now we're left with lots of similar style players who are tidy footballers in their own right but who are easily rebuffed by an organized, physical defence. Add in our chronic lack of pace from everyone but Latte Lath (who, if anything, seems too quick for his brain to keep up with) then it makes us very easy to defend against. Teams just need to slightly press us until we make a mistake and before we know it we're one down.

Do we know the nature of Jones' injury? If memory serves he was pushed to the ground by Hugill. Hard to see how such an innocuous albeit clumsy challenge could create an absence of this longevity. But I guess the days of being told to run off a broken leg are behind us.

So do you go for a squad of 22 mediocre players or 11 good players backed up by 11 poor players

We've had a tough season with injuries but I'd opt for the 11 good approach every time.
If you want a shot at promotion you need
16 or 17 good first team players like we did last year. 11 good players and 11 crap. Or 22 mediocre gets you nowhere. You're always going to have injuries/suspensions/fatigue issues to contest with, although hopefully never as many as this year again.

Agree, Luton didn’t really play much football to get promotion, they just had a great team spirit and overpowered teams, I do think we need to get that blend right, some technical players but also a few who do the physical side of the game, especially in midfield.
I am flabbergasted at how we keep signing full backs who are either lightweight, slow and ponderous or both!
Last season the full backs pulled very wide which seem to allow the midfield space, Smith would overlap and we worked it so Giles was in space to deliver.
We just haven’t had the players to do it this season.
If we can keep our better players, sign another good striker, a defensive midfielder and 2 full backs with a couple of good loans, I think we have a real chance.
I still believe in Carrick because I have seen what he can do with good players.

I have posted several times in the last month its the worst list of injuries I have ever seen for a Boro team in 54 years.
I wonder if Newcastle fans would say the same. And maybe also Liverpool. In general injury lists seem much longer this season. Good job you can bring on 5 subs. Or is the somehow related to the problem.

That is scary and raises quite a few serious questions at the same time?

I’d agree with much of that. We do get outmuscled a bit.

I’d also say we have some players that don’t fit how we want to play. Thomas, Barlaser, O’Brien, even Ayling are not players that like to receive the ball under pressure. They can’t turn and go with it, they aren’t very good at deciding when to bounce pass and when to turn. They aren’t player that get it out of their feet and their head up quickly.

I wince when the ball goes into midfield at the thought of getting dispossessed. I wait for the inevitable defensive touch, turn and pass back to the keeper when it goes wide to a fullback.

We can’t play like that with all those players in the side. We can get away with 1 or 2 but not 4
