Is Riley McGree that good?

We’ve done better without him in the team.
He’s scored a couple of screamers since he’s been here but so did Tarmi Kink.

I’m never sure what McGree’s best position is.

If he was sold, I’d be meh about it.

If it's the same injury that's flared up again (not sure if it is?) then I'd be tempted to sell McGree while we can still get a decent fee for him. He's class on his day but does seem to struggle with injuries of late.

I think he's been a cracking signing. Although it's easy to forget as it's so 'stop start' due to injuries or international call ups.

That said he's maybe run his course. Only so long you can carry injury prone players. Forss is very similar.

I'm still not overly convinced by Azaz. Although it's still early days. I think Mcgree is a far better player in that 'role'. Yet in Azaz I guess we've already got a kinda replacement.

Mcgree is entering his final year. So it's stick or twist. Throw a new deal at him or sell. I kind of get the feeling he's already on his way. Along with the 'out for the season' Forss and Mcnair.

Whilst there's some good points here, to play devil's advocate I'd suggest that any player seeming injury prone THIS season carries far less weight to it, or else we'd be ruling out most of the squad and would need a rebuild in the summer that would make the last one's look like a bit of tinkering here and there.

Love him. You forget that when we signed him he was still relatively inexperienced. Injuries have ruined what would have been his first season as a relatively 'seasoned' pro. No Asian Cup next year, full injury-free season, he'll be a key player in our promotion charge.

If we offer him a new deal, however, and he won't sign because his agent's got him a deal elsewhere, then I guess he'll be gone, as per Akpom

I don’t think McGree was choosing his games, to favour his international role at all.

The initial foot injury occurred during a match where he came off injured, even indicating that the underside of his foot was being a problem, as he left the pitch.

It’s known to be an awkward injury to cure, which flared up as he came back. I think he missed some international games, came back and got fit. Only for a different injury to occur.

(I’m not 100% here, about the last bit, but that’s how I recall it).

No conspiracy. Awful, awful luck with injuries. Just like most of the squad.

I think he suits a passing team; his touch and control are excellent and he uses the ball really intelligently.

Not the quickest though and had missed a lot of games with injuries.

I think he'll move on in the summer, probably Spain I'd guess.

Hopefully he doesn't and signs a new deal.

I don’t get the out for the season conspiracies. It’s not like they’ve mysteriously disappeared. You watched them come off injured whilst playing.
You have to love this board. Barlaser thread with people wanting to drive him to his next club because he has a poor game, the next game he has a blinder and some want him as the fulcrum of the side. Up and down like a whore’s drawers on social media. Same here. Smacks of somebody trying to convince themselves that McGree is no good to alleviate the disappointment if he should be sold. No. He’s class and we would very much miss him if he was sold.

Have to say the close season boredom threshold appears to be kicking in. Sell Jones, is McGree really that good. I mean let’s sell all our players and retire to Benidorm.

I'd be happy if he stayed and signed a new deal.

BUT. If he wants to leave and we can get an equal/better replacement in.....bye and thanks for the worldies👍

It's going to be a very interesting summer that's for sure.

By far our best player when performing. Inconsistent but has been unlucky this year with injuries. Ill be sad to see him leave if he does go but as ive stated on another thread regarding Jones, i really dont see a long queue of suitors at this stage.

Replacing a player who is comfortable with the ball at his feet is incredibly difficult in this league because so many of them were hoovered up as youngsters by PL clubs and drift between loans earning more than any of our first team. That's why McGree is a good example of looking further afield.

Keeping a solid Championship level player is a very simple decision to make. Howson wasn't fully appreciated at first but became an essential midfielder; I see McGree doing that when he has better luck with injuries/fitness, which will come.
