Is there a more questionable sporting record than the womens 100m

Flo jo still holds the record set in 1988 at -

10.49s, Florence Griffith-Joyner (USA), 16 July 1988 in Indianapolis (USA)

34 years on despite olympics after olympics and world champions after world championships no other women has even come close.

The current fastest woman Shelley Ann Fraser-pryce with all the modern shoes training etc ran her championship career best last night in Oregon - 10.67

Fraser-Pryce ran a championship record of 10.67 seconds to finish ahead of silver medallist Shericka Jackson and Elaine Thompson-Herah, who took bronze.

True but that 100 is staggering to think that the closest any women has came even with almost a second wind assisted and is still No where close over 30 years later.

Those nails of hers would surely have weighted her down and created some drag to start with...😉

To be serious, its not something I've considered previously but it's an interesting point you make about advances in equipment and health and nutrition, recovery etc and yet still no one has got close to it. Doesn't necessarily mean you can question her on the achievement though, there'd need to be more evidence of rule breaking.

Yes. The womens 800m world record. Very questionable. Nobody has been near it. Set in 1983 by a woman who looked like a man. Jarmila Kratochvilova her name.

I saw Kratochvilova run at Crystal Palace in the World Cup in 1983. She was anchoring the Czechs 4x400 relay squad. When she took the baton she was 40metres back. She then powered around to catch the American and beat her. Everybody watched in stunned disbelief.

Good point but eastern bloc records are largely now ignored as being less that secure but flo jo is still seen as the benchmark 34 years on.

It's a weird one because it assumes that the fastest person ever should be more recent but what if she was so superior that with those modern advances she'd have been even faster. Usain Bolt for example is a bit of a freak and it allows him to be far superior to everyone else ever. Same with people like Phelps. If they had been born 30 years earlier would they not still have been comfortably the best? Bolt jogged home setting the WR at Beijing. He could've set a record that would stand for decades.

I think it is worth questioning any record though because we have seen such widespread evidence of PEDs that who knows what can be trusted. Usain Bolt beating all those other people comfortably that have been caught cheating themselves seems just as suspect.

It hardly gets mentioned to be honest. I think even the americans want to forget it but they cant obliterate it from the record books because they never proved doping. And they never will.

Same with Kratochvilova. Worth watching her second lap when she breaks the WR. No fatigue, slowing down, tightening up and she beats the field by 100m.

Men's British long jump record was set in slightly dubious circumstances IMO. Chris Tomlinson was a bit cheesed off at the time.
