Lens in for Chuba?

I just don’t get this football club, or more rightly the chairman - he was happy to write of close on £30m on the likes of Assombalonga Fletcher and Gestede but won’t risk losing £2.7m (i think that’s what we paid) on Akpom who might just help get up promoted if he stays. We all know if Chuba goes we aren’t going to get anyone who will score anywhere near what he got last season, so why not keep him and take a chance he’ll fire us to the prem
I must admit I see your logic and I can only assume that FFP rules dictate that we need to generate cash to keep us within the permitted limits.

I don’t think we should sell him at at all. We’re entitled to another season from him and if he performs like last year, we’re going up. That worth a lot more to us than £8m. I know its a gamble but if seems like one worth taking to me, for the sake of the extra season shot at promotion. There’s also a good chance he signs to stay if we go up anyway.
He performed like he did last year, erm last year and we didn’t go up

I reported on here about a month ago that the French press were very confident Akpom would be signing for Lens. Think it’s been in discussion for some time this one.

but sounds very much like Chuba is up for signing a new contract and although is no doubt asking for a lot for a championship player, doesn't sound like he's asking for a daft contract. Probably one we could afford if we wanted to. I suspect we've paid worse players more while at this level.

I dunno if he is keen

I'm only going off his quotes. Although I suppose it could just mean he'd rather stay and run his contract down 🤷🏼‍♂️

“Yeah, of course [I want to stay]," said the former Arsenal striker, speaking at the EFL's season launch on Wednesday afternoon.

"I’ve made it clear that I feel at home here, so I think me saying that shows that I would love to stay."

I think he wants to stay but wants either a good pay rise or to run his contract down......we can't really afford a significant pay rise, and won't let him run his contract down. If he were to agree a 1 year extension on near enough what he earns now with a Tavernier agreement to let him go in 12 months for a fair fee if we fail to get promoted, then that could suit all. If we wants the money now, then yeah, sounds like at least 3 clubs have an interest in Ajax, Lens and Sheff Utd. Not sure any of those are in the 12-15 mill transfer ball park though

Brentford cashed in on their best player every year!: Andre grey, Scott Hogan, Chris Mepham, Neil Maupay, Ezri Konza, Ollie Watkins, Said Benrahma….I doubt any of their fans wanted to sell any of them, then they got promoted.
Yeah I know, but I don't have the same confidence in our recruitment. Hopefully that will change

Correct but we've had this model for less than 2 years so it hasn't yet had the chance to succeed or fail. Either we think this is the right way to go or we don't and chucking it all out the window and paying Chuba what he wants goes against that. I'm not saying it will get us promoted but due to parachute payments and FFP it's probably the best we can do. I still hold out some hope that an agreement can be reached but criticizing the club if it can't is harsh in my opinion. Top Championship players running down their contracts at other clubs are sold to top flight teams all the time and no one bats an eyelid. Why should Boro be different?
I don't disagree on any of it, and am aware of the realities, but it doesn't make it any easier to take. It could work out, but the likelihood is we'll probably be weaker for it

More hits than misses since the team have been in place:

Hit: Ramsey, Archer, Conteh (sold at profit), Forss, Giles, Lenihan, Smith, Steffen (8)
Unknown: Barlaser, Clarke (2)
Miss: Hoppe, Lungo (but no financial loss), Muniz (lost loan fee) (3)

Early signs are that Silvera and Dieng will be a hit. Others are unknown.

He's not risking £2.7m, he's risking about £10m. The historic cost (£2.7m) is of no relevance. The relevant cost is what Gibbo would get if he sold now.

It seems to be getting better. The likes of Brighton and Brentford though manage to find players consistently who come in at the same level as players they sell for big money That's the real difficulty. If Akpom goes it'll be interesting to see the direction we go with the money

exactly the opportunity cost is 10m+ which we can't lose out on

Promotion would be worth what though? 15-20 times that amount? Maybe more. That's the other half of what we could potentially be losing out on.
If we don't sell him now, and he fires us to promotion it will have been a far more financially astute decision.

We need more quality in the squad, we need to fund it and we can’t put all out eggs in one basket

I get what you are saying and as a fan my thought process is the same. But this is the new Boro way. Sell our best players for top fees and re-invest in youth with potential. I'm sure we'll be trying to get more than £8mil but there is NO CHANCE we will be letting him go for free next season. So if we can't agree a new contract, then the best offer will be accepted come the end of the month.
I think it’s the best model to go down, what’s embarrassing and worrying is that it’s dragged into a new season and we have half a squad going into the new season Scott is a clown
