Lewis Wing

I would confidently say if you gave Wing / Howson / Morsy / Sav and Tav all equal game time then Wing would score more or at least have more shots on target.

I love Tav but his goal and assist returns are not enough. The others simolg don't look like they will score.

We pan our none scoring CFs. Yet the midfield and CBs are every bit as bad. We don't score from anywhere😂

Tavernier is more of a box to box midfielder for me tbh

Wing scores every 491mins, and creates every 982 mins, a goal contribution every 327mins

Tav scores every 549mins, and creates every 549mins, a goal contribution every 274mins

BAsed on their history, if they were to play every minute in a season Wing would likely score 1 more goal, but Tav would create 4 more.

When you take into account that Tav is far, far better a passer, far better at all aspects of defending, and is still just 22 when the next season starts.....then Tav is in a different league to Wing. It's likely that Tav's stats will improve over the next 3-4 years. He's made big strides every season so far. He's the one to watch for me in the championship next year, I think if he stays fit he'll have top assists in the league and one of the top scoring midfielders.

🤞

Good post. Interesting to see some stats backing up my instinct. I like Tav a lot. Like Wing as well though. Obviously you don't have to slate one just because you rate the other.

Wing has done superb and deserves a career at this level, he has his flaws, but I think played in the right side, in an advanced AM or 10 role he can have a couple of really good seasons at this level. Tav, I think he's destined for bigger things, will be in the prem within the next 2 seasons, hope it's with us

I think we would be stupid to let Wing go, I can't believe the numbers queuing up to get rid of him. They were probably the same people who wanted rid of James Morrison and Lee Cattermole when we were in the Premiership.

As said Wing has a eye for goal, OK he is a bit slow and ungamely (like Bernie Slaven) but he compliments Howson and Morsy. He will not be a big wages and is settled in the area. He is not old and still 2 years off his peak age. To me he's a useful squad player and you need a big squad in the Championship. He did play in struggling side last season, but he also played the previous season when we finshed 7th which we will not this season.

It is a strange one, it's almost like he gets more stick for being a local(ish) lad rather than a big money signing. He gets more grief than the likes of Ashley "potential" Fletcher which is ridiculous given the respective value we have had out of the 2. His goal scoring ability for a CM is very rare, particularly for us! He'd probably outscore the majority of our strikers if he played every game.

I'd keep Wing, but I do think he's very limited beyond his shot, partly down to his mobility.

He played 40 games last season, scored 7 goals and got 2 assists, which is a decent return for a midfielder.

Compare that to Saville, who offers more than Wing outside of goals, has 5 goals and 4 assists in 37 games this season, which is also a good return, and people on here want shot of him.
The main difference is most of Wing's goals are from outside the box.

Im not convinced Saville offers that much more in all honesty. I don't mind him, but like Wing should be a squad player at best.

Haven't read the whole thread yet but it always strikes me that Wing gets a lot of criticism on here and elsewhere despite contributing quite a lot to the cause. I don't think any Boro midfielder has scored more league goals than Wing over the past 3 seasons. You can probably include cups in that as well. That includes Tav, McNair, Saville, Howson, even Adama Traore, and whoever else we've had in midfield since the start of 2018/19.

Admittedly our midfield does need some work doing to it and doesn't really do enough in an attacking sense - but it was always Wing that got it in the neck. To my mind Wing is, or was, the one carrying the creative burden, especially under Pulis and throughout last season, almost on his own at times. He was trying to start play, get shots off, spread the play and open the game up. He was taking risks where nobody else would. Players who take the risk will inevitably give the ball away more. But they will score and make more, it's the price you pay. The manager has to figure out a way to get the players who contribute goals and assists into his team.

Howson gets a lot of praise for his hard work and professionalism but he's got 2 goals in 3 years. It is not enough from a supposedly all-round midfielder. Saville cost us £7m or whatever it was and we're talking about selling Wing for £1m. He got 7 goals from midfield in a sh*tshow of a team last season and yet he's the one bombed out. I don't quite get it, I have to be honest.

*edit - Traore was 17/18, not 18/19. He got 5 goals and 10 assists that season though, and was passing the ball to better strikers and attackers than Wing has been since the summer of 2018.

Yea but he runs a bit funny.

The reason I’d want to keep him is because he weaknesses can be improved, surely the sports science people can put a training program together for him to make him fitter, faster, stronger.

Also surely the coaches can work with him to make him more tactically aware.

Much easier to do that, than to coach Morsy how to score 5-10 long rangers per season.

If you said now that the club will buy a central midfielder this summer and next season they'll score 7 league goals and make a couple from the middle of the pitch a lot of people would have your arm off. And yet we already have one. He might not be brilliant defensively but we have other players for that. Him and Tav behind a proper strikeforce might actually be quite exciting to watch. Just for a change.

Or we can pin everything on Tav again, until he gets injured or loses form or is man-marked out of games and then just resort back to bypassing midfield altogether.

 What a player he was. Loved watching matches when he was selected. And he barely played the first half of that season so those stats will all/mostly be from after around Christmas.

Traore got the same sort of grief on here though. SAS stopped posting rather than admit he may have been wrong about Traore. :ROFLMAO:

Traore was a complete phenomenon. Watching him run with the ball, knocking defenders out of the way, seeing them clinging on to his body and/or kit trying to haul him down, was mesmerising. It'll be a while before we see that sort of entertainment again I think.

I'd be very disappointed if we let Wing go. I think playing every week at Rotherham will have done him more good than any amount of sports science or training packages, goalscoring midfielders are not exactly three for a quid in Poundland. I don't agree that you can make him faster some players just aren't able to accelerate quickly and have to make up for it in different ways. I think he is worth persevering with but I wouldn't blame the lad if he feels undervalued by Warnock and wants off.

Not really, I don't think Wing is the quality we need. I didn't want either Cattermole or Morrison to go and felt it was a mistake with both but particularly Morrison

to have a full understanding of a players ability, you have to analyse what they contribute in all 4 phases of the match and Wing is poor when we are out of possession and a negative turnover. That is unquestionable and why he isn't really good enough for the top half.
