This is what is wrong with country. Entitled, clueless and should be nowhere near power. They shouldn’t be able to claim any expenses whatsoever except for travel and food- travelling first class out of their own pocket if they so choose.

I dislike the Tories as much as anyone but I completely disagree with this. Being an MP is a job, like any other, and regardless of party its right that you can claim expenses incurred as part of your job. Perhaps there should be some sensible limits on these, however saying you can only claim for travel and food will absolutely give preferential treatment to southern and London based MP's over northern and Scotland based MPs as no-one is going to travel down to London on a daily basis for a role as important as that, and nor should they. MP expenses are a drop in the ocean, these people run the country. If work said to me I had to be in London for half the year I would absolutely only be doing it if my stay and all expenses were covered. I think the days of duck moats are long behind us and anyone abusing the system gets dragged over the coals now, but being realistic the role of MP has to be an attractive role to people and not paying for travel out of their own pocket. Even I can get first class travel to London for work so someone making key decisions on how the country works I don't begrudge it at all. £5k in energy expenses is basically £1k a year, which is essentially going to be a standard energy bill for 5 years - don't really see the sensationalism in that.

It's stuff like this that keeps positions like MP's available to the working class people rather than it being the joy of people like Rees-Mogg.

Anyway I may be wrong but I believe its only allowed to purchase first class travel if its cost is cheaper than the standard walk on price at the time. We've seen before MP's getting harassed on trains, and regardless of what flag they fly, they probably need to be able to work in peace and quiet.

Ok maybe there needs to be a middle ground but does she need or should she be able to claim £5k for a second home?!

That sounds a lot mate but it's basically what your gas and elec bill would be for a london home for 5 years at 1k a year. If your work sent you to London and paid for a gaff would you pay £1k out of your own pocket to heat it and power it? I know I wouldn't.

All MP's will likely have claimed a similar amount, rightfully so imo. Like I said the alternative is that becoming an MP is left to only those that can afford it.

Because they work both in their constituency, helping constituents that tbey represent, but also need to be present to vote and debate the laws in London. Hence their time is split.
Then that leads to doing like the rest of us would - we go away on business, we stay in a hotel and submit receipts. They then get paid. Why should MPs take the p*ss with expenses especially as it's all paid for out of public funds?

a good headline but a complete distraction fro the real issues…

it’s like the beeb telling us how to save money by turning the thermostat down or the govt “giving” us £400 which is actually a subsidy to the energy share holders…

The big Issue is profiteering from utilities while the citizens are struggling…

Do you think staying in a hotel for half a year in London would be cheaper?

Don't you think they are all at it, regardless of party. After you with the trough.

You’d better have a word with the chancellor. Have you see how much he has claimed for heating his horses stables?

Travelodge.co.uk
A week in London travelodge ranges between £700-£1000 next week for 7 nights stay, doesn't sound cheap to me plus no laundry, cooking facilities so would expect expenses to rise exponentially, not to mention the security concern of knowing that the people responsible for running the country are all in travelodges.

Don't always know in advance they will be in London so complex bookings required with alternatives found etc. not necessarily conducive to a good working environment.

You make some good points Fragrance but why should the tax payer BUY their house for them and when they leave parliament sell it and keep all the proceeds. It must be cheaper to house MP's in a block of flats or even Buck house or any other royal residence owned by the tax payer than the present abuse ridden system

This. What's wrong with a parliamentary hostel?

We don't.
They can claim up to £25k p.a. in rent or £190/night for a hotel.

Recently read that in the US people elected to Congress & Senate can't claim housing expenses & so lots of them have beds in their offices.
All seems a bit 3rd world to me.
