Luke ayling thoughts

All three are OK, but not sure they are good enough for a side that would be promoted.

I thought Smith was capable of poor games last season - remember the 4 goals we let in at Huddersfield - I think 3 came from our right back position.

He’s alright, got skinned time and time again by Clarke against Sunderland. 32 - not likely to improve. Wouldn’t want to sign him if I’m being perfectly honest.
Not much shame in that mind, he's a 23 year old winger who will be playing in the Prem next year, unlike us or Sunderland, he's probably one of the best players in the Champo. He'll probably get 20 goals this year (which isn't his main threat I suppose), outscoring pretty much every forward we've had for 30 years, bar Chuba.

For most sides the left/ right backs are going to always have games where someone is turning them over, they're often up against the best players on the pitch, and the left/ right back position is not often one where champo teams have their star man. It's often a position filled with filler players, which is fine, if you have enough talent everywhere else to raise the team average. Ayling's a bit of a filler player, like Smith, which would normally be fine for us, but as we lack massive talent elsewhere it basically makes them look worse I think. They would both be good enough or better if we spent money elsewhere so teams feared us a bit more, but I can't see it happening so I would rather us try and find a young lad to develop.

Attacking left/ right backs get it even worse too, but only really in worse teams, which is probably why Giles never got a game for Luton. He's great in the champo, playing for a side which has the ball, but if you're under the cosh 90% of the time, then it's a square peg in a round hole, which will get exploited. It was this exact reason why I said Giles going to Luton was stupidity, as they would never have the ball.

They could be, but the side would need to be exceptionally strong elsewhere. We don't have anywhere near enough goals where we could get promoted with any of those three, and we're a bit thin in other areas too. If we don't bring those sort of players in then I don't think there's much point playing and older "safe" player like that, would rather we found a young talent who can progress along with the rest of the squad.
