The problem is his mistakes are not just small mistakes, his mistakes always seem to lead to the opposition have gilt-edged chances
The intense atmosphere won’t exactly be much good for Lumley either, plus I can see the fans really getting on his back if he makes another mistake. It didn't work out well for us last time we dropped Lumley following one of his clangers.
We could try the young keeper but it's going to be an intense atmosphere vs Derby, so he might struggle to cope with that.
You cant have been going long then.Imagine Lumley in a the bottom two leagues , he’s be even worse without a decent defence in front of him . Must be the worse keeper we’ve hd in my lifetime
My thoughts exactly.I know people hate negativity, that’s understandable. However, this keeper has made gilt edge chance making errors multiple times this season. Three times on Friday and last night's madness.
He lets in goals that are “saveable” and flaps at crosses. You can see his fellow players also are reluctant to pass him the ball.
I cannot see how stating the obvious is making him a boo boy. Nobody, even those defending him, think he is good enough for us now or longer term. He has been a training ground goalie for his career till us - after 6 months of him we can see why.
True, not boo.
Very diplomatic. Good man management. He can’t really say what we are all thinking.Middlesbrough manager Chris Wilder:
"That's a collective mistake [Joe Lumley's error] because there were two or three situations before Joe's.
"One mistake led to two, led to three, and Joe obviously takes the rap for that. But he really shouldn't because there were various opportunities (to clear the ball).
"The goalkeeper makes a mistake, let's get on with it. Everyone makes mistakes.
"It was a collective mistake because we should first spin the ball down the side and then go forward, but we invited them on and then the mistake happened. But it shouldn't have got to that situation."
Perhaps says more about the strength of the defence in front of him - I think they have been exceptional. Also we have more of the ball now under Wilder so pressure on the back is less. That said Lumley is our keeper for the season and he needs our support.Strange isn`t it
Before Wilder took over Warnock was the fall guy, mixed with a spoonful of Lumley criticism, now it`s all Lumley's fault even though we are conceding less than 1 goal per game since Wilder took over.
It would help if a better percentage of chances created are turned in to goals (1.25 league goals per game since Wilder took charge)
Not saying we don`t need a replacement, just don`t think it`s as bad as people are making out
I think someone above mentioned "average Championship keeper" and that's probably right.
I think his problems are being compounded by the style of football we're expecting him to play. Whilst his long kicking is decent he is also being asked to retain possession at the back at times and it's clear his control, touch and short passing just isn't up to scratch.
I am surprised we didn't go out to find a keeper better suited to our style of play.
For what it's worth I've said from day 1 that Daniels is a better option and was genuinely surprised Lumley started the season as number 1. Fully expected him to be backup when he signed.

Playing your way out from the back is a preference, but I'm sure the instructions weren't to attempt what Lumley didOk some comments made me smile! When Lumley was playing under Warnock, his starting career with us, I hardly ever saw him pass the ball short to a defender, it was long ball and he has a massive kick (yes kick!). That used to cause opposition defences a lot of problems - that was Warnocks style. It was so noticeable as soon as Wilder came has asked our defence and Lumley to play in a different way. Short passes from the back, play the ball out. So we are learning to play this new style and it can result in some hairy moments! we have had a few close calls by the defenders and the keeper. I was pleased with a point tonight and Joe will learn. He is the one who needs to call the shots and make the decision to either boot it or pass it, he needs to adjust fast.
Anyway i am pleased with a point tonight. hoping for a win saturday.
Nothing to do with diplomacy or man management, it is an accurate and fair analysis of the mistakes that led to the goal.Very diplomatic. Good man management. He can’t really say what we are all thinking.
Really? You thought Daniels was better.I'm not sure any points lost in the next 6 games were due to the change of keeper

Lumley is a bog average tier 2 keeper. Marshall has a rick in him as we saw at the Euros and mis kicked a couple last night and got away with them. Playing it out from the back will always highlight the frailties of a keeper's skill with his feet. Our best keeper in the Riverside years was, without doubt, Mark Swartzer. Can you imagine asking Skippy to play the role that Lumley does?
