Manchester City’s victories are absolutely meaningless IMO

To me the EPL is fairly boring because it is predictable - without the Championship games I would not subscribe to Sky.

The SPL is even worse.

Amercians understand to make sport interesting there has to be a significant element of competitiveness.

Is it though? 6 different teams have won the top league in this country this century, more than any other top or even middling league in Europe.

No, they're not doing it within the rules which have been written since the similar success of Man Utd (with their assistance, possibly) to maintain the status quo. Man City are being prosecuted but also complying with the punishment dished out as stipulated by the rules. They pay their fines.

Football is full of cheats, players, coaches, owners. They break the rules more regularly than ever and are served penalties for it.

The rules that are being talked about here were introduced, funnily enough, at around the same time that the Emirates were taking control of Man City.

Coincidence?
Definitely not a coincidence, and whether you agree with the rules or not, or you think there should be more or less rules, I suppose the overarching point is that having rules is futile if they’re not enforced.

Exactly. Add to that Man U winning no significantly big trophy in a decade
The Premier League can't win can it, if teams like City and Newcastle hadn't invested money people would fiercely criticise it as a closed shop, where only the original big 4 had any chance of winning anything.

I also take issue with this idea, "I don't want to go up because we can't compete." We'll look at Brighton, Brentford and even Fulham this season.
What's the point in following a club if you basically don't want them to be successful? When we talk about the best times as a Boro fan, who's saying -"Remember that time we finished 8th in the championship, the best league in the world."?
No, we still talk about 73/74 under Big Jack 😃

They are enforced, they're fined, they pay the fines
Ok. But I think Viv’s initial point was that the media are talking about Man City at the moment as if they aren’t being investigated for breaking the rules, and ignoring that all these great performances may become retrospectively hollow if punishable.

No, he says they are being investigated for breaking so many rules and that makes the wins hollow.

My point is about the rule makers and who the rules are there to protect.

They're called fair play rules yet they're anything but. They were introduced under the guise of protecting clubs from overspending and going out of business. They're there to protect the status quo.

Look at the make up of the committees, they're writing rules to suit themselves, not the good of the game.

The Premier League is still competitive, albeit for a small group of clubs. The rest make up the numbers. Its been like that forever and while there's a chance an Arsenal or a Liverpool, or a Chelsea can win it now and then, nothing will really change. But I often wonder what will happen if Man City go on to do what Celtic do, and win it every year. Not 2 or 3 times on the bounce, but win it consistently for the next decade, along with both domestic cups too, and add a succession of ECL wins into the mix for them along the way.

Basically, if City become so dominant at everything every season, the other 'big guns' might actually decide its time for a change since they'll be the ones spending billions just to finish behind City in a league they all know is a done deal from the off (eg. the SPL). So I'd love to see someone become so dominant that ALL 19 other clubs become cannon fodder, just to show how ridiculous the EPL was by allowing its rules to create its own Frankenstein club that ended up destroying any sporting glory the league may have once had!

I've done it on Football Manager and the game becomes shyte ;)

This will have been said about Liverpool in the 80's, Man Utd in the 90's, Chelsea in the 00's and so on, English football is cyclical and at some point Man City will fall from grace for a while. Perhaps Newcastle will be next on the pedestal?

The Saudis are involved now, they'll be challenged.

Man United won 13 of the first 21 Premier League seasons, and were a few results away from winning in most of the seasons they didn't.

Man City are still along way off that even with their current period of dominance.

The one club domination started in the 80's. It hasn't always been that way.

True, but they're not Man Utd, so there'll be plenty of criticism for them to face. For Man Utd it was just Fergy doing a wonderful job.

Corcaigh's overall point is right - the rules are made by the elite clubs directly/indirectly.
Measurement is opaque and punishment is relatively trivial and not timely.

Manchester City have obscene wealth and the source of that wealth is distasteful. Same for PSG, Newcastle and likely Man Utd (amongst others).
But in fairness, they have spent no more than Man U, it is just they are brilliantly led and managed.
United dominated and Liverpool before that with a similar combination of relative wealth and great leadership. That cycle naturally ends and it will for City.

I hate the sportswashing that is plaguing sport, but until Governments and Sporting bodies behave in the interests of the sports not just the very biggest clubs/teams, then we are stuck.

Yep. The from 1970 to 1980 Everton, Arsenal, Derby, Liverpool, Nott'm Forest and Aston Villa were all league champions in that time. Often similar for the decades preceding that too. We'll never see that diversity again.

That's one reason why I've come to really enjoy the Championship for what it is since its still a throwback to those days in a lot of respects, and probably one of the most competitive leagues in the world now. We still get the Burnley's and Fulham's now and then who can dominate but overall the parachute payments for relegated clubs doesn't have the massive unbalancing effect on the overall competitiveness that's often cited (imo). The chase for the play-offs keep it that way and keeps things interesting.

City could potentially win the PL for the 5th time in 6 years. Well on the way to becoming an SPL #2 - just substitute the runners up spot for a different team.

Add in the FA Cup/Carabao Cup Wins for the big 4/5.......

Very uncompetitive.

😴😴😴
