I don’t think it’s a coincidence that Fry has improved since McNair came back into the CB positions.
He definitely deserves a new contract.

He’s been really good this season BUT does he get into the teams that went up under Lennie, Robbo, Karanka? I think he’d be a good squad man but wouldn’t be a starter. If we’re serious about getting out of this league then we’ll be signing a better defender than him over the next few months.

I'm not sure we will be signing better defenders over the next few months. I imagine it will be the summer when we know where we are at next season.

I would offer him another year - then its a personal choice for him.

I think when McNair plays - everyone around McNair improves.

Lenihan is probably a better defender than McNair if you compare them 1 vs 1. However... Fry is better with McNair in the team, and Engel has been 1000% better with McNair in the team.

I think he's one of our most underrated players, and I hope he stays

I’d be happy to keep him on the right terms but if he goes, it won’t be too difficult to replace him. We may already have the replacement on the books in Clark.

He has been good but he’s on our biggest wage with Howson at £25k/wk if you believe the figures out there. He’d need to take a wage cut to stay to be in line with the others

Can't see us being to able to meet his wage demands unless we get promoted and then I think we'll be looking for an upgrade. There'll be plenty of others in this league prepared to make him a better offer, he's been a decent servant, but time to move on now.

I think both Clarke and Lenihan are better CBs than McNair - better tacklers, better in 1-on-1 situations, better in the air, etc...

But we already have that type of defender in Fry. I think McNair offers something different positionally and out of possession and it gives Engel and possibly even Hackney more of a free role to go forward.

When Engel was caught out against... QPR (could be wrong?)... It was because he was consistently in 1-on-1s with a winger who was quicker than him, so he was being targeting by other teams.
McNair covers that area to make this tactic harder to do, where Lenihan didn't, and I don't think Clarke does that job either.

Who's to say he hasn't already been offered one but has either rejected it or wants to wait until after January?

I don't see him being happy to take reduced wages at this point in his career given his age.

I imagine a Luton type team would be interested in a cut price deal in January if something isnt sorted.

Especially as he is back in form, I also think over the years (to the outside world - who dont see him week in week out) he has maintained a decent reputation

You reckon?

Which clubs will want him?

I'd happily extend on the right terms.

Solid and established player for us.

But he's still young enough to get a big wage move on a free, I'd be surprised if we could reasonably tempt him when he knows he's not a guaranteed starter.

I am not sure what will happen with him but I do not think we are going to offer him the same terms. Dont you have to wait til their contracts are up before offering reduced terms?
