mc nair

Jack of all trades.

Master of none.

I think he's a great squad player, and his versatility reminds me of Rhys Williams (although McNair is much better).

But I do agree, if we have aspirations of going up, then I'm afraid we need to be improving on McNair at CB. He's good to slot in for a couple of games if/when there's injuries/suspensions etc, but I wouldn't be hanging my hat on him for the full season.

The improvement defensively since he came back into the team has been astonishing being honest and something I don't think many people saw coming. It helps that we have a much more settled back 4, but we look far better with McNair at centre half than we did Lenihan.

To be fair he’s started the last 10 games in all competitions and we have only lost 1. So he’s proving his worth and showing consistency.

Same last season, our win/points rate when Paddy started last season was much higher than when he didn't. Can't be a coincidence.
I always think he looks a good player but I also think there's things he does which an ordinary fan like me doesn't realise, which improves us as a team.

Everyone praised Carrick for how he turned the team around from no wins in the first 7 games to winning 6 in the row.

One of the only consistent changes to the team between those two periods was Lenihan for McNair.

Strange one Paddy. Sometimes I think he is decent, cool headed and solid with a decent delivery. At other times I have thought he was terrible, poor touch, poor passer, panic and mistakes aplenty. My concerns are then, is he worth a high wage, can he be relied upon under pressure and is he good enough to assist with getting us promoted? Not for me.

He's been excellent. I'm sure we'd love to keep him. I think he's been a terrific signing overall. I never understand some of the stick he gets. Especially as it usually comes when he's playing in a variety of positions to 'help out'.

The big 'issue' is that he's one of our biggest earners. A contract from back in the day when we paid frankly anything to a get a player.

I imagine it's very much like Akpom. A big earner with a deal coming to an end. We can't even match nevermind improve a deal. Especially over another 3-4 years. Also why would any player accept a lower offer? He could match or better his current wage on a free transfer in the summer.

I think he will leave in the summer for free. I can't see many clubs offering a nominal fee on Jan. I'd be suprised if we didn't accept if anyone did.

I think we will miss his experience and ability to play in a few positions. Yet I'm sure the signing of VDB will have been with one eye on paddy's situation.

He has been good but he’s on our biggest wage with Howson at £25k/wk if you believe the figures out there. He’d need to take a wage cut to stay to be in line with the others

Howson is on about 15k pw now, it was well publicised he took a 40% pay cut on his contract a couple of years ago. Football league world and salary sport are wrong.

Think Paddy is the highest earner though.

It’s strange how Paddy and Dael seem to be turning out to be Boro’s best and most reliable centre back pairing despite both being targets for Boro’s “knowledgeable“ pundits . This criticism of him seems to persist even when Paddy, who is 28 years old and in his prime, just gets on with playing - latest a clean sheet against everyone’s favourites for promotion Leicester City.
Personally I would offer him a years contract at the very very least for not only has he served Boro very well and will have no difficulty in moving on to one of our rivals in the Championship. In fact, I cannot figure out why the Mackems let him go to us ? They really have thrived without him haven’t they ?

As you said, he’s 28 and in his prime. Why would he even entertain a 1 year deal when he could get 4 or 5 years somewhere else?

He will no doubt be offered reduced terms but it’s anyone’s guess what they might be. The club will have to price in a fee or higher wages as well as FFP impact for any replacement anyway so it could end up being worth sticking with McNair instead of gambling on someone else.

Don't wages have a FFP impact?

Of course but so will the wages of whoever we sign to replace him along with any fees. My point is we could pay him a bit more than a new signing with the same impact as he’s already here. Even a free transfer will want a signing on fee and / or higher wages.

I agree with this. Say he's on the rumored 25k/week... Whoever we sign is going to want 15k/week to be in line with other players in the squad.

10k difference/week for 2 seasons... Are we going to find an adequate replacement for 1 mill?
