Anyone had any encounters with these?

I've just been sent pictures from the Northumberland police taken by a cyclist following his mate who is also on a bike. The alleged offence is that I didn't give him 1.5 m space when overtaking down quite a narrow lane. If you look at the pictures I've left him plenty of room (I estimate about 1.4m) and there's no danger at all, in fact I would be more of a danger if I went further over.
For this I get 3 points or an 'educational' course option, plus £100 fine.

WTF is this all about?

No reflection on your experience but I have had multiple experiences of close overtakes whilst cycling and like YddoC have caught the driver up and had a few words.
Unfortunately I have been clipped by a driver on one of these occasions and dislocated my shoulder and caused damage to my bike, to many drivers don’t realise the impact their lack of patience has and the damage they can cause. ( like I said no reflection on your driving)

Why would it be more dangerous if you went further over 👀

Cyclist myself, had some close passes of some whoppers over the years but not reported any. Caught the odd driver up and had a few words instead
I have rarely had a positive outcome from having a few words. It usually results in me receiving bad tempered hostility and abuse.
One exception was an old guy (older than me even) who pulled out on me even though I was wearing a flo yellow jacket. He hadn’t seen me, hadn’t been to an opticians for ages and was upset to be probably waving goodbye to his licence

I am a car driver and a cyclist. When cyclng, if not daily, it is certainly a weekly occurrence that someone drives past at high speed with centimetres to spare - it's very scary. Often the road is empty, so there is zero reason to not give me space.

If I reported everyone who was less than 1.5m away, I would report multiple people every single day.

I expect this thread to go the same way as all the others on this subject. Its just as bad discussing EV's. The tribal nature of car vs bike is sad - we are most the same people.

I suggest that the educational course seems to be the sensible option

If you went further over and you yourself state it would have been "more" dangerous, then I suggest you've already confirmed that the overtake was actually unsafe in the first place.

"WTF is this all about". Obviously you overtaking cyclists and not giving them the space they need to keep them safe. It's not about you and how safe you feel.

Does it provide some sort of proof you were less than 1.5 m. ? If not ask them to provide you with the evidence so you can have it reviewed if you decide to go to court.
