New Champions League format

"We could imagine a subscription for the last 15 minutes of a specific game,” Agnelli said (via The Guardian). “The attention span of today’s kids and tomorrow’s spenders is completely different to the one I had when I was their age.

If you take golf, if it’s interesting at all, it’s only the last six holes on the final day. You are not going to watch the whole thing on the TV unless you are a hardcore fan.”

The idea that 90 minutes is too long for people to pay attention is a baffling outlook by the people in charge of European football.
It's the thin wedge to them trying to reduce the length of matches.
I think it also fails to, deliberately or not, to understand the target audience. How often do you start watching a cup game with no real allegiance for either team, and by the last 30 minutes or so, you, for whatever reason, desperately want one of the teams to win.

You have to watch the whole game to become emotionally invested in it. I wouldn't bother watching only the last 15 minutes.

A mechanism to make more money, anyone think?

People do watch those matches in american sport though, I guess it matters less when every game is available and the money shared out accordingly.
I just feel like people will become fatigued by it. Ask supporters and so many of us will say get rid of the group stages, keep the World Cup at 32 teams, bring back the Cup Winners Cup and knockout football in European competitions, do away with 'seeding' and overblown international breaks spread over 7 full days or whatever it is(nations playing 3 games in 7 days at different locations in Europe during a pandemic!), have more matches at 3pm on a Saturday and a couple for telly instead of the other way around. The people in charge must hear that and then quite literally decide to do the opposite.

A little pet hate of mine is the fact it's still called 'The Champions League' - when in fact a team that has won absolutely nothing from the previous season can qualify and go on to win 'The Champions League' the following season.
Exactly.

It should be two teams from EVERY European country, winners and runners up of that country's league.
NO seeds.
EVERY qualifying team to be put into the draw, yes you could potentially have a group containing all the big teams but this adds to the excitement.
Knockout rounds should be 1 game only, the first legs of the current format are boring with both teams playing for a draw or not to concede.

Don't watch C.L football, or at least very rarely. Sometimes I would watch it in the pub if you can remember them. Will this new format entice me back. Not a chance. Read that article and its ludicrous. Looks like the format has been dreamt up by Sheldon from The Big Bang Theory.
Rather watch the kettle boil :)

Got to be the most boring cup competition in the world.
Without a doubt

I remeber someone posting on the old board & saying you're not a football fan if you have no interest in the likes of Juventus v Real Madrid, rather watch any match, whatever level, than any match from the greed is good CL farce

Absolute lunacy and pure greed😒

The 'champions league' or top 4 league has enough dross in it as it is. The competition doesn't even get interesting until the quarter finals.

You have teams getting pumped 5s and 6s during group games. It's hardly the best in Europe.

I have little or no interest in either European cups. I think it's wrong that you have to play so many games in the europa league and more so that teams who've bombed in the champions league go into it.

The world cups and Euros have already seen this happen. These tournaments should be for the elite and the best. You look at Scotland celebrating. They were awful in the group stages yet still went through. It was harder not to qualify (sorry Ireland). Even Malta and Macadonia went through😒

What we enjoy is the uncertainty of sport.
No business wants uncertainty.
A knockout competition is anathema to the big clubs.
We need to look at fan ownership as the likely end game of super leagues is the US franchise.

Why not just play 15 minutes each way?! Get more games in, play em in Qatar etc... and room for more sponsors.....win win...a bit like the Hundred in Cricket......I'll get my pitch ready for Uefa ;)

If they want a super league, the so called elites that is. Let them go. But who decides who the elite clubs are?
the European cup should be the champions from each European country playing knockout games, not aggregate or a league system. However, they don’t want that as it brings uncertainty. But it’s the uncertainty and unpredictability that brings interest and excitement. Knockout games with true champions would be breathtaking. I as a neutral would tune in to watch that. Real edge of your seat stuff!

Didn't know it was on - I'm watching Blackburn v Swansea and will switch to the QPR game when this is over.....
You know what. I've made a fool of myself 🤡 What I was watching earlier was a replay of the previous Sevilla v Dortmund match, they actually play at 20:00.*

*If anyone from UEFA is reading I apologise for insinuating you were putting commercialism ahead of live football by showing adverts during a game

The big problem with creating a European Super League is that someone has to finish bottom. Who wants to watch 16th-placed Chelsea play 13th-placed Atletico Madrid in an end of season dead rubber? People already avoid watching group stage matches. Everybody knows the group stages are, in the main, utter sh*te. A construct to protect the wealthiest clubs and keep them in the competition for longer.
I think they should have their 24 team European super league on the proviso that the club that finishes bottom each season is defuncted and all their players, directors, coaches etc made unemployed and banned from the sport sine die. Eventually there will only be one giant SuperMega club left but with no-one left to play they’ll just have to **** off!

I just feel like people will become fatigued by it. Lot of sense posted there👍

It's funny that the guy with these horrible proposals is Chairman of Juventus, who are on track to be knocked out of the Champions League early by Porto tonight.

£105m on a then 33 year old Ronaldo to try and win the Champions League, it doesn't look like it's happening.

They're also on track to concede the league title after a decade of dominance.
