Next seasons realistic aim

Crowds are going to be down on this season which is a shame. Might impact our start to the season. Having said that, we had good crowds at the start of this season and that made no difference

I think we need to match Carrick’s ambition and spend a few pennies this summer.
We must have a few in the coffers, following the sales of Tav, Spence, Akpom, Rogers for approx £40 million over the past two years.
We really aren’t far away from a very good starting 11, if not squad. I’ve no doubt we’d have breezed into the top 6 if it wasn’t for the freak number of injuries.
The Club has fvck all. We lose money every year. Any investment needs to be funded by Gibbo.
We have FFP headroom so we can spend and stay within FFP limits. But we had FFP headroom last season and didn't maximise it....

Not even thinking about next season. We still have 2 games to go this season then we have the Euros to look forward to, so after England lose on penalties at the quarter final stage, I will then start looking forward to next season! As you will have noticed, I am full of optimism at the moment.

depends on incomings and outgoings. You would thgink that if the current squad is enhanced we should be capable of automatic promotion. However - lot's of factors could come into play - teams coming down, injuries, getting off to a flyer etc etc. I also think that playing thewinter transfer window just right will make or break between automatic and play off positions.

Realistically, we will likely finish about 9th this season, so will we have a better squad than the 3 PO teams that don't get promoted this season, and the 3 teams that are coming down?

Hull will lose all their key players (much like we did this season, after last season).

Coventry will also recruit again.

I hope the target is PO's minimum with an eye on the auto's.

We rarely have a strong start to the season, so I would like to see us make a good start in August/September so we're not playing catch up.

A striker (to compliment Latte), a winger to replace McGree, a CM to replace Howson. And we should have a decent squad to give it a go.

Depends on recruitment, though the squad is much better now the foundations are being put in place. Would be disappointed if we were not to make the playoffs.

Get new signings in relatively early and bedded in
Know your best starting 11
Get off to a good start in August
Yep I felt this season particularly and also the previous season that any preferred 11 did not get much friendly match time together before the 1st match, Taviernier being sold destroyed our preparation last season , but this one I'm not sure if the 1st 11 who walked onto the pitch against Millwall had been put together outside of training?

Base it on points. The most points we have managed in a season since relegation is 76 under Pulis. Our goal next season has to be a minimum of 80 points. That is something like 23 wins, 11 draws and 12 defeats. It will probably mean we end up around 4th. Realistically, that would represent a major improvement from this season and give us a decent chance at the playoffs.

apart from the injuries and slow start - our ability to overcome weaker teams let us down this season. I'm sure that MC will be looking to address this next season

Why does anyone think we are close to challenging? I just don't see it.

I can give you a few reasons..

* We've managed to stay in touch of the play offs despite unprecedented injuries and season of huge squad turnaround.
* The league will be weaker without Leicester, Leeds and hopefully Southampton. Plus Sheff United (starting on -2 points) Burnley and Luton/Forest.
* Hopefully Ipswich fail to get promoted, McKenna is poached and their squad falls apart.
* We have money and FFP headroom to invest this summer.

Depends on what happens over the summer.

If we can sign a few more players that are similar in quality to Rodgers, Latte Lath and VDB, and if we can keep them fit, and if we manage to hold onto to the best squad players that are already here, then we should be aiming for the playoffs at the very minimum.

That is lots of "ifs"

Hopes: We keep our best players, sign Ayling or another right back, and strengthen the core of the side with a few experienced players that won’t upset the team dynamic too much.
Coaches to spend a while drilling the players to not lose their concentration and concede sloppy goals.
We challenge for automatics

Expectations:
We sell our 3 best players late in the transfer window, leaving us little time to replace them, suffer key injuries early in the season, by December we’re solidly mid-lower table.
Late whimper for the playoffs after Jan transfer window.
We go again etc.

Reality: probably somewhere in between

The squad has nowhere near the quality to put out a top 2 team when fit.
It has been shown to have insufficient quality to make the play offs, despite it being a big squad.

Will the squad's best players remain?
Will there be a nett transfer spend that recruits the quality we require to really compete?
Will we borrow some additional quality we can't afford to buy?

If the answer to those three questions is a resounding YES, then we could compete for top two.
I suspect the reality will be yet another year of fiddling around and selling anything of clear quality.

You aim to finish 1st.

Your fall back is 2nd.

A realistic “expectation”, however, would be top 6 with a decent chance of sneaking into the PL (where we would probably stay for one season).

Anything below 6th (again) would be a disappointment. Anything below 10th would be a disaster.

We aren't in touch with the play offs.

Why will we be stronger compared to this year when we are weaker compared to last year?

90ish points looks like top 2 form for the last few seasons. We are more than 20 points shy of that.
