NFL trades

As a Browns fan it's been an odd week for the roster.
We've signed Amari Cooper 👍, will be losing Juice Landry 👎 and Baker has apparently asked for a trade after we've traded a record number of picks for Deshawn Watson 👍👎. Not at all sure about this last one given Watson is facing a few civil suits over sexual assault even though a Grand Jury couldn't find sufficient evidence for a criminal case.
I suppose all NFL fans face some sort of moral dilemma at some point in their supporting lives.

As a Giants fan, I want us to trade back for more picks next year when we won't be in cap hell & could actually put together a solid team for the next 5 years rather than try & plug holes this year to be slightly better.

BTW have to feel for David Ojabo, a projected first-round pick, after he suffered a torn Achilles at Michigan’s Pro Day.
Although born in Nigeria, he grew up in Scotland and would've been a nice bit of British interest in the draft & for future seasons.

As a packers fan gutted that Davante Adams has gone, especially as it’s the Raiders. Not sure we got a good deal neither. A first round (22 pick) and 2nd round (53 pick)

Been a Browns fan for nearly 40 years and trading for Watson has really put my loyalty to the test.

Totally divided the fan base and many have said they won’t support the team any more. Some of the most staunch Browns fans on Twitter have deleted their accounts.

Can’t switch to another team but a part of my fandom died with this trade. First time I’ve been to a Boro game without my Browns cap or hat in many, many years on Saturday.

What's the problem with Mayfield, where Watson is going to be an improvement? Watson seems to have a lot of baggage too? Mayfield is hot and cold, but I think he'll get better.

I wonder if this means Mayfield will end up at Seahawks, not quite sure what I think of that mind.

(I don't follow NFL as closely as some of you, so sorry if I've missed something)

On the pitch Watson is a huge upgrade on Mayfield, he's a player that could win you a superbowl in the right team.

The problem is that off the pitch how can you turn a blind eye to what he's been accused of? He's not the first athlete to be accused of serial assault but this accusation is from more than 20 different women.

How important is it really to win? There's no way I could support a player like that on my team.

It’s very difficult. He’s one of 53 players but the most important one.

Can you support the team but not the player? Think that’s the issue for a lot of Browns fans at the moment.

I don't think you can.

This isn't an offensive lineman who you don't notice half the time, he's literally the heartbeat of the team.

I've watched him play live and he's a brilliant player, he's literally making unbelievable plays every game. If the Browns won a superbowl you could pretty much guarantee that he'd be the league MVP.

The team have sold their soul for a superbowl chance its that simple. I'm a dolphins fan so I had a similar dilemma when Watson was linked last season.

If it was me I would just watch the rest of the league on redzone as a casual fan, I couldn't support him. When he leaves I'd come back and support the team again.

I suppose the counter argument to that is that most teams in the league have players with a checkered past and the fans don't stop supporting their teams, but something doesn't sit right with the thought of supporting Watson.

I can see the argument but it’s a ok saying walk away and just watch the sport but if you’ve supported a team for a long, long time it’s not straight forward.

As you say the NFL is full of players of dubious character, players actually found guilty in a criminal court (Watson hasn’t faced criminal charges) but it’s not a good look.

He will likely be suspended for a decent number of games anyway.

I know its not an easy choice to make, just giving me thoughts on how I'd feel. I think I'd find it hard to enjoy success if he was involved in it. I'm not judging any Browns fans who stick with their team either.

My current feeling is that they are still my team but I feel less of a fan than I did before this happened (if that makes sense?).

Any success (and as a Browns fan who has suffered considerably over the years) will be tainted (unless of course even the civil cases are dropped/won)

It's a difficult one. On one hand, the Grand Jury found insufficient evidence to proceed with criminal investigations. On the other hand, he still has 22 women accusing him and lodging civil cases. I'm all in favour of "innocent until proven guilty", but when it's that many, it's hard to believe something is not amiss, even if their lawyer does come across as everything I'd expect from a US ambulance chaser.

What's difficult to swallow is that the Browns evidently don't care if he's found guilty in all those civil cases: they've handed him this contract even if he's found guilty. Even if he were found innocent of all charges now, that "we don't care" stain lingers on the Browns. I'd find it hard to maintain support in those circumstances.

Meanwhile, I've continued to enjoy the alternative economy of NFL free agency. I can't help but wonder what football would be like if we didn't use monetary value for transfer fees but used an alternative currency such as draft picks instead. It couldn't work, but the concept still intrigues me.

Bills deals look interesting Beasley out and von miller in

Plus Keenum in as back up QB for josh.

to name a few

Pretty much my thoughts, just explained a lot better.

As a Browns fan I'm with yearby in that I can't stop supporting them, but if we do succeed then it'll be hard to enjoy it.
The Browns do seem to be going all in behind Watson, not only from a contractual point of view, but also in that we were set up for a run offence and we'll have to make some changes to accommodate Watson's game.
The suits against him do seem numerous and as intimated above, there is always that doubt that not all of them might be legitimate and some might be chasing the cash. I can't help but think though that it's likely there is some truth in the allegations due to the number of accusers.

Like Mayfield he seems a bit hot and cold to me, against some bad teams he looks like a world beater but then when it matters he doesn't look interested.

I think he's a better passer than Mayfield though, but I always think it's hard to compare the QB's from teams we don't get to see a lot of, so it's hard to tell if it's others around him helping that? I don't know much about Browns or Texans offensive line/ receivers to be honest, so I'm going off limited info.

I don't think you can overlook the "off the field" stuff though, and a year not playing, and not even training much really won't have helped him.

I've watched a lot of the top QB's live in the London games, players like Brady, Brees, Rivers and Big Ben in their prime and Watson was probably the most impressive. He was running for his life play after play and still making big plays with his feet and arm.

He's got a top 10 arm, he can throw on the move and he's obviously great on his feet to escape pressure.

If he recover from a year out of the game and all the pressure that will come with the controversy I think the Browns will have a top 5 QB.

He was on a Texans team with some top talent, players like Hopkins and Fuller as receivers and a good defence on the other side of the ball but on the whole they weren't a great all round team.

At the Browns he'll have a good O line, a good running game and great receivers again. They are a better team than the Texans ever were, the only problem is they are in a tough division and an absolutely red hot AFC.

To make the playoffs in the AFC you'll need to be virtually superbowl calibre next season.
