Northern culture according to the Conservatives

Apparently we all like football, whilst those cultured southerners go to the ballet or the opera.

As a northerner living in the south, who goes to both football and the ballet (only one or twice a year albeit) I'm unsure whether to be offended or not

It does however show how the Conservative party view the country, and I'm sure all those Millwall fans who regularly leave the Den and head to The Royal Opera House for the 7pm performance of Swan Lake will be conflicted too.

Stereotyping for sure but given that I'm no culture vulture it would be disingenuous of me to be offended. Mind you I did watch Jacob Butterfield dicky dancing for a spell.

Edit: And I believe he was trying to make a point, however clumsily, that football is an important part of 'northern' culture/society and as such needed to be protected during the current 'difficulties'.
I don't 'do' the performing arts, they leave me cold. Mrs Chickenrunner has slammed me and junior for not supporting her by attending her am-dram performances. Needless to say we counter by saying she's never been to a Boro match, lame I know but it's the best we've got.

You know, I've never been to the ballet. Sadly.

Mind you, I haven't been to a football match for a couple of years either. Not sure I'm yer stereotypical northerner.

I agree with his point, and it is and does, but equally not every northerner lives and breathes football in the same way that not every southerner goes to Glyndebourne - it's lazy sterotyping.

Is say Portsmouth not important to the people of the south coast town, as much as Burnley is to the people of the town ?

As I've said it is clumsy stereotyping, and as you point out as likely to offend rough @rsed southerners as much as ballet attending northerners. But it's hardly the Tories biggest crime when stacked against all the others. Rather than just taking offence 'northerners' would be far better off pointing out that the lack of 'ballet lovers' is more likely down to the fact access to performances is limited and London focussed.

I've watched Billy Elliot and it's a great film, however if my memory serves me right he ended up performing in some place in London to magnify what he had achieved .................... not Easington Colliery Labour Club.

Ballet is rubbish and file as 'what's the point' along with going to see a musical.

Jeez, you are me and it's not a good look.:D

I go to the ballet and theater a few times a year and about 10 years ago I got my dad a couple of tickets to see blood brothers and he realised he loved the theater too and he worked at the bridge yard most of his adult life. What we like tends to be what we are used to. My 9 year old lives the ballet and theater

What he's said doesn't offend me as it just displays the typical thought process of your average small-C conservative, and as said, there'll be southerners offended by it too. There is some truth in it though, there are way more football clubs per capita in the NW than anywhere else in the country, and I've no doubt there are way more ballet classes and performances in the SE.

Having now read it I can’t see why people are seeing their @rses over this. It looks like he’s comparing ballet to football because double the money they’ve given to the Royal Opera House alone would save the entire football league! Perhaps it was more a veiled dig at out of touch southern Tory MP’s rather than the general population.

the same type of thing was said when the Batlic Gallery was opened in Newcastle all those years ago and its still going strong.

the north will always be bitter drinking whippet racing flat cap wearing neanderthals and the south will always be shandy drinking tossers.

stereotypes are always going to be attributed to certain parts of the population - prejudice its called
