Funny, reading this and seeing the extreme swings of taste. Must admit, I had never seen a live ballet until 6/7 years ago and went with a friend to see Swan Lake. I'd had a lifetime of the same kind of thinking already alluded to on this thread - that such fayre was only for posh people and not for the likes of me. I came away in absolute awe of the performers. It's not a medium I'd go and see lots but the skill and poise of the dancers was stunning, and the spectacle as a whole beautiful.

Musicals on the other hand? Bleurgh! Again, it's not underestimating the skill of the actors/singers but I just find them embarrassing. Cheese. I've been in one donkeys' years ago and had a blast but I still wouldn't ever do it again, even if I was 20 years younger and several clem lighter.

Blood Brothers is the one exception - I loved it - but if I'm being really honest, that's just because it speaks to my soppy/sentimental liberal/lefty sensibilities!

Why to see Swan Lake as a school trip when I was about 9. Mesmerising. Do schools do things like this any more? Or is it just trips to theme parks . . .

It always surprises me when people say "thats not for me, I won't do it" how do you actually know if you haven't done it? I didn't think I'd like opera, but turns out I do. I'm certain I won't like ballet but once I can I want to go and check it out. See what its like.
