I think you’ve picked a bad example in Portsmouth. Portsmouth is a pretty big footballing city. Lots of local support for their team.

Probably, Oxford or Milton Keynes would be better examples.

I've watched Billy Elliot and it's a great film, however if my memory serves me right he ended up performing in some place in London to magnify what he had achieved .................... not Easington Colliery Labour Club.

Ballet is rubbish and file as 'what's the point' along with going to see a musical.
Musicals are great, I'd deffo recommend the book of mormon as a starter when we can finally get back out into the real world. I went to watch ballet once, it was crap

I love the bits notes 4 and 5 where it says Stockton is in County Durham.
At least we now have the official answer to that question.
The thins you can learn from the opera and ballet!

Independent authority[edit]
It became a unitary authority on 1 April 1996 and is a part of the Tees Valley region. For ceremonial purposes the borough is split between County Durham and North Yorkshire, along the line of the River Tees as shown in the map (left) with County Durham to the north and North Yorkshire to the south. It is the only council area in England or Wales to be split between two ceremonial counties.

Not questioning people's love of musicals here but I'm completely with TD on this. Musicals, why? We're all different, thankfully.(y)
Tbf I'm not a big musical fan, I'm more into normal theatre. Just book of Mormon is really hilarious. Worth watching despite the genre

Now this might just be my crazy mind but I can't get out of my head the thought that Tommy Dickfingers dislike of musicals stems back to a trauma in his childhood when he was rejected for piano lessons on account of his implausibly large fingers.

London has a lot of of what is generally labelled "culture" and Northern Towns/Cities like Burnley, Middlesbrough, Blackburn, Sunderland love their football. Its partly a class thing - working class areas of the South East are heavily into their football like Portsmouth and Ipswich and somewhere like York has a lot of culture in the North.

I have never been to the Opera or Ballet, but I belong to the Art Fund and often visit museums and art galleries and I am volunteer at a local Arts Centre. So I enjoy my football and culture!

I've never been to the ballet either. Is there any singing or is it all just graceful type dancing to classical music? Sounds fairly harmless and if it does get a bit dull it should be easier to have a nap than if you are at the match.

I dont see why that matters. Portsmouth is in the south, does the team matter to the fans any less then it matters to natives of Harrogate as an example ? The fact that it's a big footballing city reinforces my point, southerners care about their football clubs too.

Never been to ballet or opera and although I don't know this for certain I don't think my life is any less for not going.
My Dad dragged us all to see John Hansen in The Student Prince in London in the 70s. Still in therapy to this day. Still have nightmares over this.
