NW saying we are going in a new direction, Wilder a long ball merchant?

Think we need a left sided centre back before we go down that route. Bola could probably do it but then you would have to play Jones or Hernandez wing back and I’m not sure that suits them. I think Wilder may go with 4 at the back to begin with and maybe go another way when he gets players in to suit his style. All speculation of course.

I did wonder if Wilder would be relatively pragmatic to begin with in terms of the system. Or if we will go a completely different route than the overlapping CB'S and maybe that was just what best suited the Sheff Utd team at that time.

I think the 'overlapping centre halves' is a bit of a red herring really, in that it's a small part of the overall identity of his time at Sheff Utd (can't say I know much about the promotions at his other clubs).

High pressing, high energy, attractive football that delivers results.

What could possibly go wrong?

His system would probably suit Spence on current form, maybe Coulson too. McNair and Dijksteel can probably play the pushing up RCB pretty well, maybe Bola as the LCB too.

Wonder if Siliki or Tav could play left wing back? Howson could have possibly played right wing back, but I doubt he's got the energy levels required these days.

Payero, Crooks and Tav in the middle? Sporar and Coburn up top?

I'm not so sure. It was a big part to their tactics . Obviously a big part is you need to be high levels of fitness and be cohesive and organised as a team to get it to work and it was key that he had players that were there for multiple seasons from their time in league 1 and knew the system inside out.

I love the skepticism. I'm on the same page and I know managers are an absolute lottery.

This is true, despite solid track records on paper it's impossible to guarantee success.

Having watched Sheffield United under Wilder whilst at university, his style of play is far from hoofball. It was an absolute tactical masterclass crafted on creative football, utilising pace and basically operating four out of a back five as midfielders. If anything, it's pretty much a return to a Rioch-esque style of play. Could help us craft a serious identity.

Wow, he's not even in the seat yet and he's got his critics and doubters! Dear me, our fans really do amaze me.
For a club of our recent stature to attract Wilder speaks volumes about the long-term project being envisaged by Mr Scott et al. He's a top manager who should be coaching at the very highest levels of the game and arguably would've been without last season unravelling as it did.

I think some of our fans automatically dismiss any British manager older than 45 as a hoofball merchant.

Good video Sheriff. I seem to recall SU playing an exciting style of football during their rise.

One thing was clear from the video: they didn't snap into this style overnight. I doubt we'll really see it kick in until next season.

However, I'd think McNair and Dijksteel would be pretty good in those sorts of roles.

18 months ago he was being linked with 'top sides'. How's his stock fallen?

I'd say the large majority of champo fans would have him. I can't believe folk are calling him a hoof ball merchant or 'younger Warnock' etc. Did they see Sheff UTD? When we played them his match day squad cost less than Britt😂

They scored more goals than Bielsa's Leeds.

Exactly. If anything, I think out of us and the Geordies, we've got ourselves the better manager!

I think you're right. If he was called Wilden, Wildino or Van Wildstrum, those same fans would be purring.

Exactly. He's a cracking appointment.

I think most reasonable Boro fans are most likely being cautious about managerial appointments considering our recent escapades (Maybe not the OP). Most will reserve judgement on Wilder until he produces results at the Boro.

But I do agree that some Boro fans want a fancy named foreign bloke as they would be excited just like everyone was excited about Payero because he was from Argentina.

I agree to an extent but it's ridiculous to call Wilder a 'long ball merchant' when his football was anything but.
