Our cutting edge

Been missing for the last few games. Nice play up to the final third then........

Cause for (a bit of) concern or just a blip?

1-0 would still be fine, even if Lenihan pops up with one off his ar*e in the 94th minute 👍

Early ish goal Wednesday and I could see a Norwich/Hull type performance where we relentlessly batter them. Just need that clinical edge to be there.

I’ve raised this with a few of the lads.

2 goals in 4 games. Was it 1 shot on target at Luton and Rotherham and Coventry last week? Barely troubled their keeper yesterday.

We need to make better choices in the final third. That ruthless touch. I also think we are afraid to shoot at times and always try to create the perfect goal with 10,000 passes.

Walking out of the ground yesterday, chatting with a Coventry fan, he said ‘I think we’d be out of it if you lot would actually shoot’.

Didnt see the match yet because ive been on nights but if its out like last couple games ive seen then sounds lime theyre still taking too many touches and too much time round the edge of the box. Sometimes you just wish theyd pull the trigger a bit earlier but top scorers in the league so theyve been doing summat right and theyve been effectively nothing games so im not too concerned. I fancy us to get an early goal on wednesday but i wont be able to watch to because im on nights.

There might be a few issues in our team but goals isn’t one of them.

So Is that now 3 games in total in the regular season under carrick that we’ve not scored in.

So goals isn’t an issue

I think a lot of our failings going forward and not being able to find that killer pass or finish in yesterday’s match in isolation was down to nerves. Slight caution in over committing.

Wednesday is now a one off game which we have to win, we didn’t yesterday, so hopefully that rhythm in the final third comes flowing back.

We’ve looked short in ideas in and around the box the last few weeks.

Looking at us specifically against Coventry... that's now 3 games we've played against them this season and haven't won any of them.

Also now 4 without a win in recent form, and as I've mentioned above.. 2 goals in 4 games.

Early goal on Wednesday will hopefully settle us back into the groove we were in a month or so ago.

Fine balance between nullifying their threats in Gyokeres and Hamer and having enough craft and guile to score goals to win the game.

The game we lost against Coventry was under Wilder, the second game was a meaningless one for us and the third was a controlled first leg performance. Nothing worries me about that statistic. The only game that matters now is the fourth.

I honestly think we're missing Howson and that right sided attacker so much. Forss/Ramsey bring so much to the team

Personally think we need to move the ball more quickly. We‘ve gone back to slow passing build up which is allowing the opposition teams to get men behind the ball and we’re struggling to break teams down. Let’s get the ball into Mcgree, Jones, Akpom feet more quickly and then they can turn and be running at a back peddling defence which will also bring Archer more into the game.

I wouldn’t place too much stock in the final three league games TBH. We knew we were done and it was about just getting through unscathed. Yesterday we created one outstanding chance for Chuba and their ‘keeper made a fantastic block, and we were a whisker away from being in and scoring through Jones. I think we got Jones in two or three more times as well?

Wednesday is so delicately poised. I thought this yesterday as well but I honestly think if we score in the first 10-15mins we could absolutely hammer them 4 or 5-1. I think we have the quality to tear any of the three playoff teams apart.

Also it’s worth pointing out that we were cheated at Luton Town, let’s be honest. And the two games before that one saw us knock in eight goals against Hull and Norwich.

Some of the players get into great positions where you think 'just shoot' but they'll take another touch or turn back looking for a pass. It can be frustrating especially when it's the 7th, 8th, 9th time it's happened.

One player who doesn't do that though is Archer, who unfortunately just couldn't get in the game. Give him one of those chances and 9 times out of 10 he'll score.

Coventry play in a way that doesn't really suit us. They sit very deep. Our best performances have been against teams that play a high line and leave room to exploit on the counter. That comes naturally in games when we are winning and the opposition is chasing so we might see it if we go a goal up. Thankfully we're also capable of patient build up play to break teams down. We did it several times yesterday just didn't quite get the finish or the final ball right. Compare it to Coventry and they seemed to have a single option for attack which was a huge ball forwards and hope the attacker gets to the ball before the defender. There is no support for them so as long as we continue to win 1st and 2nd balls we can mostly concentrate on playing with the ball ourselves.

I thought that we played well within ourselves yesterday as we knew that the onus was on them as the home team to come at us.
Carrick knows a thing or two about 2 legged ties and I think that was reflected in our 'don't lose the tie today' approach.

I'm not concerned about our record Vs Cob. That only matters if the players are concerned and it's hardly like they've schooled us/bullied us.

The comment about Archer @TheYorkshireTerrier makes is right..I expect him to be more involved in the second leg and ideally he'll take his chance.

I expect them to sit deep and try and hit us on the break. It's finely poised, but I think that if they let us have the ball as much as they did in the first half yesterday, we win. You can be as good as you like without the ball, but it becomes so mentally fatiguing playing against a side as busy as us.

I've thought this as well the last couple of weeks. In particular Giles's crosses seem to have suddenly gone off the boil. The Luton game and Coventry home game in particular weren't great. Also 9 time out of 10 this season Akpom would have burried that header yesterday. Hopefully just a blip and they will all be flying Wed night.

Chuba’s lost his goal scoring touch of late, good save by the keeper yesterday on to the bar, but a few weeks ago he would have burried that. Having Forss back should lighten the load up top. Pleased to see us looking more solid at the back.

I don't think we held back at all yesterday, we went out to dominate and looked to score, unfortunately we didn't create enough chances and by half time Coventry were back in it.

They, like us, struggled to create. Both defences dominated with keepers barely troubled.

It's still very much in the balance.
