Parking Charges to be introduced at Stewart Park 😡

This is sad news for sure but a couple of observations- 1. Most Councils across the Country have implemented these types of charges years ago 2. This is clearly a Council with a really difficult financial position looking at all options the raise funds - being a new administration it’s a position they’ve inherited, but if they want to avoid special measure (which would be be significantly worse for everyone) they need to have explored every way of balancing the books.

We all understand the predicament Middlesbrough Council is in but councils must strike a balance between generating revenue and considering the impact on residents, businesses, and the overall community. Public opinion and engagement in dialogue are essential in these decisions before implementing them.

In an ideal world, yes, however there are only certain things where consultation is mandatory, and even when it is, decision makers don’t have to abide by it if they can justify actions for other reasons.

No doubt councillors and officers will be doing it with a heavy heart, but if the alternative is going bust, it’s a small price to pay.

'With a heavy heart' meaning - couldn't give a sh1t, and you know, that making £50 a day parking isn't going to stop the council from going bust.

When you vote for cuts to council funding, when you vote for increased spending on welfare and social care, then you put your hand out and ask for free parking, you've got a F***ing cheek.

This area, Teesside, has more Tory MPs than Labour MPs, we've voted for the cuts, the council need to raise funds, you've got to put your hand in your pocket.

Money and power is highly centralised in the UK, particularly in England.

The vast majority of taxes are collected from us and businesses by central government. More balance in tax collection would help local councils.

Lets get back to real local democracy with rates set by those having to provide the services.

And yes, I'm old enough to remember that system.

It will just reduce usage and drive more people to the other parks in the area with free parking like Preston Park.

They are also going to introduce permit parking in the surrounding rounds The Grove, Marton Manor etc at a cost of £10 to each resident....so they are also going to tax people to live NEAR THE PARK 😦
If they live there they will have a permit?

I don't see how this helps. Half the town centre is empty and as pointed out we have far higher than average requirements for care. If rates had to be set to cover the costs the other half would be empty too if business rates were increased to help fund the shortfall. The simple fact is that this region needs more investment from central government. I feel we are stuck between Newcastle and Leeds, essentially in no-mans land, and the chance of real positive change is far lower than Boro's chances of winning the FA Cup.

Quite possibly the worst idea I've ever heard.
Why is that, not a fan of democracy?

Have you seen how stretched councils have become, how many functions have stopped since we moved to central government taking over rate setting?

The government should be funding and providing social care, not the local authority.
