I don't disagree with you and fully understand where you are coming from and absolutely respect that.
However, (and this part isn't directed specifically at you, just a general observation) ... In a healthy democracy, politics SHOULD be debated and discussed. I wish our papers were full of analysis and explanation on policy, that people were taught and learned and discussed the pros and cons of policy and arguments were about ideas... However the media loves tribalism and loves creating this adversarial environment that creates the thing you quite rightly want to avoid.... They keep us fighting amongst ourselves and maintain the status quo in the process and real democracy takes yet another serious injury.
Most issues are completely solvable when they are looked at properly and not managed through focus groups, targeted demographics and deliberately playing on people's concerns and fears to engineer votes. Divide and conquer kills debate and kills democracy
