People not from the Teesside area, and without a Teesside family connection, following the Boro

Wingate and Station Town are really one of the same ... I am from Station Town ... is it me! Initials BW
Afraid not mate, his initials are RE.

How old are you?

My mams family are all from Station Town. Sure you remember the shop in the middle of Station Town? That’s my Gran

From South. Early 1980's Teesside Poly & worked, lived Crescent Rd, used to watch home games in 2nd & 3rd Div for something to do, affection grew for Boro & the town (despite pretty dangerous times for students back then), even did a couple away at Darlington (dreaded cup ties) & Roker, was devastated for the town when the club folded the year I left to go back south. Watched the funding campaign with Gibbo from afar and celebrated when Boro were saved because I knew what it meant for the area. So it crept up on me slowly & I've followed Boro ever since...
Strongest memories still the fun of a few cheap pints of Worthy, Magnet, Strongarm or 80/-, then a cold drab walk to the ground, crowds of 5-10k unless a big cup tie, ***** football but always a few laughs in the Holgate, and the entertainment of watching the loonies carrying on with the away fans in the far corner. 40 years ago now!

Born in Kent, moved to Middlesbrough when I was 5. Parents were from Leeds and loyal fans, I swore my allegiance to Boro in the playground. Moved away from the area aged 9 and have lived in the East Midlands and South West since, and kept my loyalty to the Boro.
After 45 years away, I returned for the first time a few years ago and absolutely loved revisiting my old haunts around Stokesly/ Hutton Rudby. I love the area, people, sense of humour. Living near Middlesbrough was the happiest time of my life.
Crickey I had to re read that…..thought I was on an acid trip the first time.

Born and bred in SE London, no connection whatsoever with Middlesbrough or the club, but have been a faithful and fervent Boro fan for almost 28 years now. I don't know any other Boro fans in person and I've only ever visited the town to watch Boro games - sadly only a handful of times due to the time and money involved, but I get to plenty of away games.

Am living in the US now and my last live game was at Fulham on the first day of the 21/22 season, but I'm Boro daft (as they say). I wear Boro shirts everywhere I go, I almost never miss a game via video streams and I care very, very deeply for "my" club.

Good post and well done for your choice How did the Boro sneak into your DNA?

Where are you in the States?

Few on here might know him as he goes to a lot of away games, but lad called Minty from Wolverhampton. Seem to remember the story he told me (many years ago like!) that I think his uncle it was, took him to a Wolves games when he was a kid and they got beat, so he said to his Uncle he was going to start supporting the next team who played Wolves at home. Been a glory follower ever since. :ROFLMAO:

Great fella though.

That's BoroWolf who used to post on here many years ago, and I enjoyed a few beers with during the European campaigns but haven't seen him for many years. He's got a massive Boro badge tattooed on his back, but the reason he told me he supports us is slightly different, but does involve his cousin.

His uncle took him to a Wolves match with his cousin, who he didn't like and who supported Wolves. He said to his uncle "who are Wolves playing|" and when his uncle said "Middlesbrough" he said "well I'm a Boro fan then" and that was it.

As I said I normally spoke to him after a skinful, so I may have misremembered that story.

I could put so many likes on many of these posts.

I left the area in the dreadful winter of 1984/5, for work, despite a decent vocational degree I could not find employment to match - 33% unemployment where I lived and it was so grim for young people then, there was so few vacancies. Must have been a 100 people chasing one job. On Teesside, ICI and British Steel were cutting back their workforces, Smiths Dock was on its last legs, Shell shut its Teesport refinery, the rolling mills @ Cargo Fleet went - lots of the former industrial south bank of the Tees was bare or derelict. Nothing appeared to be happening to replace what had been lost.

Brilliant thread.

And no need for the inverted commas around "us" or "we" for the non indigenous supporters, you're as much a part of our fan base as anyone else. Probably all as passionate as any of us I suspect.
Must say my mates who are born and bred Teessiders have never had this "us" or "we" attitude. But then we could never, ever be accused of being glory supporters like large numbers of plastic PL fans. Chose Boro and had to accept everything that goes with it.

Like my mates dad said waaaaaayyyyy back "never bet on the Boro son, they'll always let you down".

😁

Agreed, brilliant thread! Didn’t realise there were so many of us. In the late 80’s (I think) I went to Villa Park for a league cup much (lost 3-1?destroyed by Tony Daly) as my other half (Teessider) was feeling homesick. Got the bug and also season tickets, even though it was a 400 mile round trip. Never looked back! Odd how for a MSM ‘unfashionable’ area, Boro generates such genuine passion amongst its non-Teesside devotees.

It's far more interesting supporting a team like ours. Builds character! 🤪

Suspect we're getting far more pleasure out of this stupendous run were on that Man City fans get from winning a league cup.

Two lads I know who came to Boro to study at the Uni both still big Boro fans 30 years later - neither miss a match on the commentary or video via MFC live

I remember taking one of them into Ayresome park in the Holgate, he was from London and had never been to a footy match in his life - it absolutely grabbed him from that day on, he cried buckets when we won the League cup! :ROFLMAO:

I never realised how many Boro fans supported the club who had no historical or family ties until I moved to London in the late 80s when I was 20. Middlesbrough Supporters South was/ is (I hope) full of these characters who are proud Boro fans who travel home and away, it would make a good book with all their stories ( monies to charities).
