Pick your England team for the World Cup

Pickford

James Stones Maguire Chilwell

Bellingham Rice Mount

Foden Kane Sterling
Exactly that depending on the opposition. England have shown under Southgate of tactical flexibility. I reckon they'll switch between 4-3-3, 3-4-3 and 3-5-2 at times.

If it's 3-4-3 or 3-5-2; Kyle Walker will play on the right of the back 3.

The weak links are Pickford who I would replace with the Arsenal keeper and McGuire.

Trent A Arnold will be fit this time. A shoe in.

Sounds left sided but Jamie Vardy is a great super sub to have.

………….Ramsdale

TAA…Stones…White…Shaw

Bellignham…Rice…Henderson

Foden…Kane…Grealish

Wouldn’t have James in ahead of TAA, he’s been playing in a back 3 with azpilicueta on the right side recently. And James looks a fair bit heavier than pre injury to me

It’s an interesting dilemma when England have 3 of the best right backs in the world yet are looking at Maguire as a starter, who’s arguably not even one of the best 3 centre backs at Man United based on form this season.

Walker has got to start. Whether the RHS of 3 or at right back, his all round game and phenomenal pace puts him ahead of James and AA.

Goalkeeper is a concern, Pickford always seems to have a mistake in him, Ramsdale doesn’t move his feet quickly leaving him flat footed and Pope just seems “ordinary”.

Rice has exceeded expectations from my perspective and is now a powerful, all action midfielder that can carry, retain and use the ball effectively. Bellingham is also superb and those two should form the fulcrum for England for years unless someone even better comes along.

There are a multitude of options in attacking positions that should scare every defence rotten. Foden, Sterling, Grealish, Kane, Mount, Smith-Rowe, Saka etc

The main issue for me remains ball retention. Put pressure on the defenders and we go long too often. On that basis I’d go 3 4 3 with;

Pope

Walker
Stones
Chilwell

James
Bellingham
Rice
Saka

Foden
Kane
Sterling

Pickford has to start surely ? been immense for England and has kept Everton up. Reece over TAA any day of the week

Similar to most... Foden, Grealish and Mount should start in my opinion and Maguire has to be replaced. We'll be competitive regardless.

Fantastic team we have at the moment, If we'd had a better manager, we would have won the Euros last year. It will be the only thing that will cost us at the World Cup.

Absolute nonsense. We look a good team because the current manager hasn't been afraid to play young players and has created a team spirit and unprecedented harmony amongst players from rival clubs.
Before Southgate we were a global embarrassment, an absolute laughing stock. Managers who had a Golden generation of players better than this generation failed miserably on a regular basis, we were a penalty shoot out away from being the best team in Europe last year.

Global embarrassment? Steady. Southgate has undoubtedly been a success and am delighted he is at the helm but we were not a “global embarrassment”. We just underperformed and Southgate was able to change that dysfunctional so called golden generation with equal talent who can play together. I always thought the problem with England 2006-2014 was that they were playing players because of who they were and not how they fitted in. Southgate changed that.

This bunch are better than the overhyped 'golden generation'.
