Possible bad news about SA variant

The South African mutation may well make the current vaccines less effective.

The next couple of months are crucial. We certainly don't want Rishi coming out encouraging us all to eat inside again or for Boris to rush us out of lockdown early.

I wonder if this is why we have locked the borders down so quickly. The penny has finally dropped.

Sorry it's the Mail.

Daniel Altmann, an immunologist at Imperial College London, has said the studies examined the blood of small numbers of people who recovered from COVID-19 or received a vaccine only probed the capacity of their antibodies to ‘neutralize’ variants in laboratory tests, and not the wider effects of other components of their immune response. The data also do not indicate whether the changes in antibody activity make any difference for the real-world effectiveness of vaccines or the likelihood of reinfection.
Still in the "too early to tell but worrying if true" box.

I honestly feel like going upstairs and hanging myself.
What a pointless existence we are currently living with precisely nothing to look forward to.

It is indeed a horrible time mate. There's a lot of misinformation passed about online that panicked people will swarm all over if it is sensationalised media talk etc, but I have to admit I've not looked into the strain spoke of in this new thread. If this is real, then it really is so worrying and an absolute headache ... I have said before a lot of folk expect a return to 'normal' life this year by Summer, etc, but I really don't believe we're going to get anywhere near that. There's going to be a lot more patience required to say the least. I really hope I'm wrong.

We're in this battle for a long time. I truly hope there's no truth in a new strain being a threat to all the progress made on vaccine production etc.

Whatever way things happen to pan out over the next few months, we're all here for you AET. So many of us struggling together. It's so debilitating. I hope tomorrow's a better day for you if you're struggling today. Let's hope that we see numbers drop and vaccination rollout starts showing an effect in a positive way in the coming months.

I have to try keep myself away from reading a lot of information on reports of new strains popping up left right and centre at moment, just to get myself away from the noise of it that's so draining. Just doing my best to be careful out and about, respect the rules and hope we see an end to this nightmare soon. Will be great when we can all get together again and finally get back to games cheering on the Boro.

I’m no expert, but I was under the impression that there’ll always be loads of mutations and they’ll mostly be weaker than the earlier strains and cause less hospitalisations? Even if more contagious and/or resist to vaccines?

Meanwhile, in Wuhan, they’re celebrating the first anniversary of their “victory” over the virus with complete normality. When are they getting all the new strains?

If could be arsed I would scan about to find a decent source but can't bring myself to do it :(:(:( hope it's not bad as it sounds.

That is my understanding. Mutations are weaker.
I desperately need something to look forward to. Someone mentioned the Boro but it’s just pointless in an empty stadium isn’t it

The media reporting has been terrible and full doom from the start. The number of "what if" segments popping up on the news is shocking. They should report the facts and not stories.
Kinda been full doom because there’s not anything to be cheerful about? Or am
I just being a doom merchant ? Answers on a postcard....

You dont think the vaccines have been something to be positive about?

(I think) AET more is referring to new strains and the possible threat to the efficacy of vaccines developed and now in wide distribution, would be a huge setback if there was any truth that a new mutation of the virus caused such problems, but let's hope there's not any truth in it. More likely I'm hoping it's just the same as other strains that tend to transmit a lot easier but the vaccines all have effects against the virus the same way.

It's easy to see his point why he is feeling so down about it. It's bothering so many of us in horrible ways and every bit of negative news where ever it may come from day to day, reliable source or not, just makes us feel further away from a return to normality.

I think my main concern past few weeks is the uncertainty surrounding the length of time one can expect to be protected once vaccinated. All sorts of conflicting reports, it's hard to get through it all. Like a load of white noise, sick and tired of it.

This might not sound like a lot AET but winter is hard enough at the best of the times. In 4 weeks times the days will start to feel much longer and it will start to warm up. Keep the faith 👍

Keep your chin up mate, I know it is very hard to get perspective and get out of your own head, but there are literally billions of people in the world who would give everything and risks their lives to be in a position to live a life that 99% of UK residents live in. Focus on the positives.

Just imagine, you could be a mackem...................

The South African mutation may well make the current vaccines less effective. We'll surely never be able to quickly make a new vaccine and get it out there in time so we don't have to lock down again. There isn't simply enough infrastructure. Maybe there will be in 2-3 years, but there isn't now.

If we get the SA variant spreading through the UK and hospitalising vaccinated people we know we are goosed. It will be lockdown after lockdown. And we know what that means...

The next couple of months are crucial. We certainly don't want Rishi coming out encouraging us all to eat inside again or for Boris to rush us out of lockdown early.

I hope I'm wrong. I thought 2020 was the start of the disaster movie and 2021 was the happy ending. It could turn out that 2020 was the trailer, 2021 was the movie and the happy ever after doesn't arrive.

I know I'm a fuqtard but...........

I thought the whole approach of the vaccine development was that the rna protein that was chosen was to build immunity against the part of the virus that built the 'crown' structure? As that is what the 'corona' virus uses to attach to its host, not attack the virus bit which makes you ill?

So any 'corona' style virus would be protected against?

The media have done their best to keep us terrified with fear about them, I know that!

Not sure the thread title is particularly clever either to be honest.

I've no problem with people discussing and sharing reports like this, but everyone is struggling mentally to varying degrees right now. Having "it looks like the virus might win" staring everyone in the face on the front page might have a bigger impact on some than the OP realises.

Maybe worth everyone just considering that some are really struggling with this, so if we are sharing "bad news" to try and do so in as balanced, non sensationalist way as possible?
