Post vaccination lockdown exit strategy

There’s more than a “handful”
Proportionately, in a population of 68 million? I disagree. If I go in a shop these days, I honestly almost never see someone without a mask on. I notice it occasionally, of course, as you'd expect because there'll always be rule breakers, but the idea that its widespread dissent when you look at just how many millions of people are complying with the government requests virtually 100% doesn't chime with me at all. Maybe I live in a phenomenally compliant part of the country or something, but I highly doubt it.

Your definition of a handful and mine clearly mismatch. My friends daughter works at the local coop metro and she is abused daily whenever she asks shoppers to put their mask on. She has skin the thickness of a rhino fortunately otherwise she would quit alongside a few ex colleagues who have. And that’s the local secondary pitch shop. You read depressing stories about supermarket workers getting terrible abuse and this isnt from one or two. Multiply every local coop and you have more than a handful.

It means nothing without taking proportions into account. My definition of “a handful” is I’d say is less than 10%. If you get abused 3 times a day, that means you only need to serve 30 compliant customers a day. Are you saying she doesn’t? Or are you saying she gets abused by like half the customers? Obviously I’ve no idea of her experience but I’m simply pointing out that anecdotes don’t really tell the whole story.

To start getting back to normal we require infections to be low & deaths to be low. This will reduce pressure on the NHS. Due to the number of younger people in ICU (below 50 years old) we’d need a very large vaccine take up.
we’ve also got to accept that at the first sign of things not going to plan we have to stamp down hard to reduce infections again.

I expect that outdoor sports can start again in March/April and beer gardens will be back open in May.

It was a good point raised about NHS staff ptsd. Definitely worth keeping an eye on. Watching the news earlier showing the emotional wreck the drs, nurses and morticians were in was heart breaking.

A lot of pubs will not make it to May.

For example you know this £1000 grant wet led pubs were getting last year? 74% of them have still to receive a penny of it. Not that £1000 does anything really. For example our rent 2 years ago at work was £80,000 p/a. It's higher now and we do food and drink.

“I’m simply pointing out that anecdotes don’t really tell the whole story”

But you did exactly that, base your opinion on what you've seen in your vicinity.

Got to agree with you. I see very few people in the Supermarkets without masks(I know they have changed the rules themselves now). In town people mainly seem to be wearing in shops although 50/50 between shops. I take mine off between entering shops. I do see odd person going into corner shop maybe to buy a paper or collect a takeaway without putting a mask on but they are few and far between. Definitely not as widespread as people make out on here. At least not where I live.

I think it’s fair game to take it off for a bit between shops. All the research says risk of transmission outdoors is minuscule and of course you should still keep 2m or more. If you wear glasses you need a breather!

Are you totally back to normal then?
Im personally still in managed isolation but watching the news, speaking with family yep pretty much life is normal. They still have the barcodes on everything to check in to (which are not used much as it was) but you wouldnt know a pandemic was on other than no overseas tourists and the grim news at 6pm every night about elsewhere in the world.

Really? It’s only a year away. I thought that sounded ok! If it means totally “full” normal.
I couldn’t do another year of this and having redundancy hanging over my head all that time. I genuinely believe I’d end up either mad, in prison or dead. Ashamed and embarrassed to admit I’ve never been in such a dark place as I was in the summer.

Nothing to be embarrassed about.

I just meant I could handle masks in shops or whatever for another year, as long as we can see our families and friends throughout this year.

But yes, it’s different threshold for everyone and really tough times in general. I really hope we’re out of it ASAP.

I am completely with you.

Another few months of this madness will finish me off. I’ve battled depression for years and had two months off work in sumner as couldn’t cope with the disruption to life. I ‘m lonely and I need order And structure and simply can’t cope.

Have tried to go on about the effects On mental health of the millions seemingly unaffected by covid on here but no one listens or cares. Neither do whitty vallance van tam...so why am I bothered ?

I think there are people who will listen and who do care. As callous as it sounds, and i dont wish to dismiss your feelings out if hand, rather than look to the medical experts you have mentioned, maybe you could try looking more locally? There's a sticky with some very good links. I would make that my starting point, not the figurehead we see in the briefings. They are tasked with a different remit

I’m getting help or at least I was until a few weeks ago. Long story

Point I was trying to make (obviously badly again) is that those high ranking officials know what damage they are doing to the mental health of millions of people by locking the country down. But there is never any acknowledgement.

Surely it's a fairly linear relationship between vaccination and opening up of society? % of vaccination should lead to fewer people getting ill/dying? There's an acceptable level of risk built into everything we as individuals (and society) do, albeit difficult to define with relation to Covid.

Two things for me seem to be pretty much agreed - we won't eradicate the virus and it will continue to transmit. I believe an acceptable level of transmission and hospital capacity should have been agreed (and communicated) before now, with a suitable exit strategy built around it.

The only significant unknown which could disrupt that plan are further mutations, but given the prevalence of mutation in viruses (virii?) generally, I would hope a plan exists somewhere for this eventuality (ha!)

Once the 4 priority groups have been vaccinated if the government keep lockdowns on the table there will be some interesting discussions been had on here. 😵‍💫

People do care AET, just not everyone, but most do.
