Promotion

This was probably asked last season when we were doing well with Wilder. Even with Carrick and Akpom there is no guarantee we can reproduce the form next season. If we don't get promoted, or even if we do, there will probably be no Steffen, Giles, Archer or Ramsey. So would we rather struggle in the PL but it be exciting because it is the unknown or stay and bemoan why we aren't clicking like we were last season. A Wilder style collapse is always possible.

I do get the point though. I hate the PL. The money has made it pointless. We can't compete and our only opportunity for success is not being relegated. We are as close to winning the PL this season as we will be any year. We just can't ever compete with the money at the top and even if we could it's because we've been taken over by some super rich head-loppers so I wouldn't want that anyway.

Pointless hypothetical question alert

If we could get Carrick and Akpom to both confirm that they would definitely stay for next season whether in the Prem or Championship would you take another season of Championship football over promotion? I think I would.

Have you been sniffing glue?

Are they not under contract anyhow?

1 player doesnt make a team and without Ramsey and Archer next season we would need some seriously good replacements

I think one or two are missing the point of the OP. We all know it will be great for the club, blah blah blah but it was for us as fans. For me if we can make a decent (mid table) fist of it then it’s got to be promotion because getting beat to another Ealing Haaland hatrick at the Etihad rather than 4v2 at Huddersfield is still a plus. However!!! If it’s two seasons surviving by the skin of our teeth then I’m sure on here it will be an echo of the Leeds board.

I'd have had no problem with our season under Karanka if we'd stayed up.

The problem was that we were ultra-defensive and it didn't work.

I'd snap your hand off for surviving by the skin of our teeth in the first season.

I 100 % wanted us to finish as high as possible in the league and now I want us to win the play offs. However, I understand the argument against the premier less games, the chances are we will get battered more than once if we do go up and probably lose more that we win, every game in the championship is winnable unless the manager is that **** Warnock, whereas in the premier there will be plenty of games we have little chance of winning but we will get to see better player have bigger crowds but overall I think a promotion winning season in the championship will be better that a relegation battle in the premier.... but guess you still need to give the premier ago but not as sure as I would of been 15 years ago

I've enjoyed this season so much largely due to these two. Been reading Leeds fan's all over twitter today bemoaning the last two seasons and wishing they were back in the Championship with Bielsa. This season has been one of the greatest ever experienced by us Boro fans and it makes me think that I'd love another season of it.

Almost feels like I am only wanting us to go up so that we don't lose Akpom and Carrick, rather than the fact of being in the Prem.
I have said similar to friends recently, but honestly - I don't think I mean it, for all the reasons people have said in this thread.

For every Leeds having a rough time of it, there's a Brighton on cloud 9 - we want to aspire to be a Brighton, not be scared of becoming a Leeds

Look at Brentford as another example that good football principles can carry you along way in the prem.

I see your point… it’s enjoyable seeing us win and it could be even better next year… but it’s a gamble…and promotion is a gamble buts that’s the point of it…. even with VAR let’s see how far we can go… “better to try and fail than never try at all”

We finally get to play the mags too .. its been far too long. Probably the longest period we've been in different leagues
That's a good thing to be fair. Our record against them over last couple decades has been terrible.

It's the cycle of the north east.

Boro normally smash the Mackems
Mackems normally smash the Mags
Mags normally smash the Boro

I'm not even sure I mean it either!!! And without a doubt if we win at Wembley all be going as mental as everyone else.

Loved the 90s and 00s when the club were in the national spotlight and competing with the best teams in Europe. I want us to get there again but maybe I'm just scarred by the Karanka season! The gap between the Prem and the Championship is just so big. That said I feel the club is better run than the last time we went up so hopefully we have learnt from the mistakes

I know where you're coming from anth, in fact I decided long ago that the day we get promotion to the PL will be the day I happily retire from watching the Boro, although I'll always look out for their results. I dislike most things about the PL - particularly the hype - and have probably watched highlights of only a couple of games over the last several seasons. I just can't watch it unless the sound is off as the fawning commentators and 'pundits' make me want to throw things at the screen. I don't think I could bear a season of them commenting (good or bad) on my beloved Boro.

One successful season in the Championship doesn't mean you'll do well the following season. Huddersfield were basically robbed of promotion last season, this season they're awful and only potentially saved by Warnock.

We have also seen it in with Reading, Barnsley etc in recent years.
And here, play offs under Pulis to flitting with relegation under Woodgate/Warnock.

If I am not misunderstood both will be here next season...as both are under contract, we have exercised Chubas one year extention and unless a ridiculious offer was put forward Chuba will see his contract out as he was going to leave for free in the summer so what do we have to lose, can he do it 2 seasons in a row promotion or not he hasnt as yet?

As for carrick he will be here I have no doubt, it is one thing having a good run and promotion but what prem job would he be offered based on his short career to date that could tempt him, Leicester?

I think he will want to build something here get us promoted and keep us up that is a mangerial achievement!

We had all this scare mongorin with Mclaren, Robbo, Karanka and it never happened!
