Protest at the snooker

Did you read the whole Twitter thread? To me, it said, people will think Just Stop Oil are waaankers, but the issue will become a priority in peoples minds.

In turn that will make it, eventually, an issue for Government.

When protests are non disruptive the issues are forgotten about.
I just don’t see the link how it becomes a priority to people just because of disruptive protests. This has been going on for years now and it’s changed nothing. You would expect if people were that concerned the greens would have had a huge boost and they are polling lowest of the major political groups at the moment. Climate change policies just don’t seem to be vote winners

Ultimately the average voter will have much bigger priorities and concerns

Of course it has changed something. We are having discussions about it. People are far more aware of the issues and are coming round to thinking action needs to be taken.

Every time climate change activism is in the news it plants a seed.

It's things in the media that drive what the average voter's priorities. Do you really think given an honest choice Joe Public would be more concerned about small boats that affording to eat and heat? Well if you look on the papers it's immigration immigration immigration.

If climate is in the news then people will prioritise it.

but that is exactly JSO's point.

If you are facing an existential threat and you are trying to make it important to people to act now, when they say "this is terrible, what can we do?" & you go 'eat less meat & vote Green in two years time', the size of the threat compared to the action they have to take, they think it can't actually be that urgent/important and disincentivises them to take any action.

Appalling sentences. The establishment are going to hammer protesters.
Rightly so, closing a major road network for almost two days. Costing the economy loads and stopping people getting to work/appointments. Hopefully it will be a strong deterrent to anyone stupid enough to do the same thing in the future

not sure it'll act as a deterret as they'd already decided to give up disruptive protests.

2 jailed
Bet the little rascals would think they'd only get a suspended sentence and a slap on the wrist and they'd be home for afternoon tea with cake and crafts.
They won't serve the full amount of time but a spell in there over Xmas might do them the world of good.

What a depressing attitude.

The future of your children in the balance but a few people had to take the long way round the M25.

This government is getting increasingly oppressive. Do we have to have rioting in the streets before the penny drops? We already incarcerate a greater percentage of the population than any other European country, we have an under funded and (in cases like the Met and our own dear Cleveland Constabulary) incompetent or out of control Police Services.

But yeah jail two protestors and throw away the key.

Hurrah for democracy eh?

So it's do what you want with no consequences? That's a depressing attitude to have. As said they won't serve the full time, probably 12 months.

"Essex Police claimed small businesses lost hundreds of thousands of pounds, including one that estimated losing up to £170,000 in earnings.

The force also referenced a heavily pregnant woman who needed urgent medical help; a child with additional needs who could not access medication and a person who missed a best friend's funeral."

Imagine you were that best friend or the woman who needed medical help or the business owner. You would be irate.

Granted I was wrong about their privileged background. Seems they aren't privileged at all. Their current and previous lifestyle funded by you, me and the rest of the country.

You really are a piece of work aren’t you?

You initially reckon they had a privileged background = boo, hiss, they don’t know what life is like for ordinary people.

Turns out they don’t have a privileged background = boo, hiss, I am funding their lifestyle.

Even more depressing that you think full closure of a major road just meant a few people had to go the long way round

Forgetting the huge cost to the economy in general, what about all those businesses, self employed, people who don’t get paid unless they can work who lost out during those two days? Even worse in the middle of a cost of living crisis. The same people who have zero control over the countries use of oil and can do nothing at all to change things.

Expect all of those defending them clearly weren’t caught up in it, or can easily afford to miss a few hours work stuck in traffic

The sentence is spot on, do you honestly expect someone to be able to cause that much disruption and get away punishment free? If they did it would encourage so many others to follow and every road network would be at a standstill every day

Very predictable views from some on here 🙄

Ridiculously harsh sentences.
So should someone just be allowed to cause that much disruption and get away with it? You can believe in their cause as much as you want but surely you can’t think that’s acceptable. Once they get away with it once the same thing will happen to other road networks, transport hubs etc.

Just how much disruption can we allow in the name of protest? How many hours work can people be made to miss before measures are taken to stop it?

I never sad they should ‘get away with it’.

They should not, however, get more harsh sentences than people convicted of violent or sexual crimes.

Or, you know, Tory peers who fleeced the taxpayer to the tune of £100m plus.

The sentence is the sentence - fair enough. My view - totally over the top but, I recognise, view is irrelevant.

There is a sense of injustice here tho because it appears to be politically motivated.
Politicians bullly, take bribes, cheat the tax payer and keep their jobs on really high salaries.
In my humble opinion a sense of fairness in the justice system needs to be evident.

It doesn’t appear to be that way - just my belief.

I understand yours - so reckon we are ok to disagree and crack on.

They had previous convictions for a similar crime yet continued to reoffend. Not sure what else they could have expected. Warnings couldn’t have been much clearer yet they still went ahead with it
