Realistic expectations of England’s chances

How far do people think England will go in this tournament?

I have to say I do not feel optimistic.

I will be glad to see us get out of the qualifying group.

Said it on another thread, it really depends who we play in the second round, but I'm not optimistic. Especially if we play France/Portugal/Germany in the second round.

Things never work out the way you plan them though. Even the Scotland game will be tough for us.

Second phase is our norm, I think it could be this year too, if we do well in the group stage.

I can't understand what Southgate has been playing at in the warm up games. His first XI should have been out there getting used to each others game. To play that line up yesterday in the final warm up is poor. I hope he proves me wrong.

If we don’t get out of the group then that’s the worst performance at a major tournament in my lifetime.

Beyond that though, it really is a bit of a lottery. I am not gonna set too many expectations but I just hope we don’t go into the thing feeling like playing the Netherlands or whoever is some kind of David and Goliath affair where England are the underdog and it wouldn’t be too bad if we just went out on penalties.

With the squad we have, our investment, and the strength of the PL, we should expect to beat most teams in Europe to be honest, on any given day.

Draw with Scotland but qualify from group.
Lose in first knock out round with a contributory factor being a couple of defensive lapses.

Centre/ holding mid is too weak, for me, semi's at best is what I think.

We don't have many players who would get in any other team, just lots of ok/ good players, but come the World Cup it should be a different story with more time for Foden, Bellinham, Sancho etc.

Grealish has to start, one of the few with the key to unlock any defence.

I don't think I can make a judgement yet until the Croatia game as the starting 11 for that will be completely different to what we've seen in the two friendlies.

Stones, Walker, Chillwell, James, Mount, Foden and Sterling are all yet to come in... that's 7 players, they will make a HUGE difference to how we play.

If we get out the group then it's a lottery from there really, but I wouldn't base anything on those two friendlies.

I've no idea. Literally none. We could do really well, we could fail abjectly. My only hope is that the FA doesn't overreact to an early exit and sack Southgate he deserves a run to the World Cup with this team/squad, this has been a very unusual year and there is a lack of preparation that has resulted from these circumstances.

Hmm, in ANY other team? Not sure about that like. I'd say of the 23 other countries, a good 18 of them would have the majority of our squad in their starting lineup if they could.

I'm really hoping we don't see a team containing 3 CBs and 2 defensive midfielders.

If we play on the front foot and aim to outscore our opponents then I think we can go all the way with a bit of luck.

If we invite pressure like we did second half at out last world cup game then it's all over.

Given there's only 18 months to the world cup and then another 18 to the Euros we might as well stick with him for the next 3 years and just see what happens. By then Gerrard will be ready to take over.

I think we could possibly make the semi’s with a little luck along the way, I say that in hope more than expectation. A lot will depend on how the draw pans out during the group stages. We look fairly strong offensively but we are going into the competition with one of the worst set of centre backs i have seen in an England squad ever. Mings, Coady, Stones an injured Maguire and the in experienced White. This position above anything will be our undoing i fear. Judging by Sir Gareths decision to include White, I think he does too.

I get what you mean. However, I really hope we do because i think we have a terrible set of centre backs in our squad, woeful, more ricks than a farmers field, our quality is in the final third. I think we need to be as tight and miserable at the back as we can be and hope the likes of Foden, Mount, Grealish and Sterling can supply Kane to do his thing whilst chipping in with the odd goal themselves. I don’t see us having many clean sheets in truth. I can see a few 2-1 scorelines and score draws in the knockout stages. We need to get practising penalties and keep Henderson well away from them.
