Ring Doorbell - Corporate Greed

Ring have announced a staggering 43% increase in their annual subscription from £35 to £50. There was a similarly hefty subscription increase last year as well from £25 to £35. It's just utter greed. I'll be cancelling my subscription and just using it as a regular doorbell from now on. I think they might see a lot of people cancelling. The price rise is unjustifiable.

Will look at another system for CCTV I think which allows me to store data locally instead of a subscription service in the future. I'm getting really tired of subscription services just hiking prices and I definitely lean towards paying slightly more for one-off purchases.

I got my email yesterday explaining the above and I felt the same as you. On reflection, when you think it is less than £5 per month for another added piece of security, it isn't too bad.

What gets me though, I was bought the Ring Doorbell for Christmas and only subscribed at the end of January after my free month and already the price is going up from £3.49 to £4.99. I would like to know how many more new subscribers they got in January.

Edit: If you see another CCTV Storage System, will you let me know.

Yeah, I got that email yesterday, mine just renewed at £35 a couple of weeks ago so I'm good for 12 months, but I'll probably cancel next year and just use it as a live view doorbell rather than back everything up to their cloud. Screw em!

I was going to pay the yearly subscription but decided to pay monthly due to there being no reduction for the yearly payment over the monthly, I will get caught with the rise now.

Is there an alternative to Ring, a subscription free video doorbell? Out of principal I'm cancelling my subscription.

I have 2 hikvision cameras at my front door linked 24x7 to a NVR. 1 close up and 1 wide from the other side. They have line cross and presence detection. Once either are broken it takes snap shots to my Nas and sends the feed to my TV. No monthly subscriptions, but with the other 3 poe cameras I bet my electric bill is way more than a subscription 😭🙄😁

Without wanting to get into a debate about the surveillance state and privacy - you'd think there'd be a good argument for govt subsidy on these things to aid police inquiries etc.

I have nest who also put the prices up.

I'm keeping an eye on the home assistant compatible local systems as at present I'll stay with nest as the killer feature is facial recognition. We don't have a doorbell as I'm not really happy with the technology anyone's offering in that space, so we just have an extra camera at the door. But it's useful to see who is at the door as part of the alert. Nest app is annoying though and I'd much rather have it all in my home assistant ecosystem

I have a couple of Hik UHD cameras. No NVR. Store a couple of weeks footage on their SD cards. Do intrusion notifications and the app is free. Energy wise they are rated 8w max.

Fine for home use.

Won a ring doorbell in a comp. Paid for a year's subs. Will be switching the cloud off before renewal. Not because I can't afford it. I just don't like to see companies profiteering.
