Roadmap may be affected - Indian variant

I fully understand some people’s nervousness about the future, but it’s worth noting that the headline could also be written as:

“Roadmap may NOT be affected - Indian variant”
Which in my view, it should have been. But the newspapers led with worse.

Typical media scaremongering to keep us on our toes ahead of the relaxation on monday.

Have you not spotted the pattern yet? It happens everytime we're due to relax the rules. Good news >>> bad news, Good news >>> bad news, Good news >>> bad news.

Quite frankly sick to death of all of this now, as i hope 99.99% of other people are. Vaccines are proving to be a game changer - hospital admissions won't get anywhere near the levels of before, which is the only reason for lockdowns.

Time to move on now.

there is an outbreak in Blackburn and Bolton where the rates are back to the eye watering levels of last winter. 543 per 100k and cases up by128%. If this variant can elude the vaccine and it is a big if. Then a little more restraint may be required

You can’t influence the past though
It's about time that they learned that dithering exacerbates infection. Every time when there has been an opportunity for pre-emptive action the Government/Johnson has dithered. Whether it was allowing thousands to gather for the Cheltenham festival, second lockdown or this time a spike of infections in India, every time they have been slow to react.

That said, I believe that there will be a third wave but that wave will fall upon a (largely) vaccinated population and it will not cause a precipitous rise in deaths or hospitalisations. We are getting there and I see no reason to worry unduly.

Give us a hug! 💋

If you're still buying this after several members have pointed you to useful resources to re-engage then as humans we have no chance.

This will go on forever, this will not end until we collectively start thinking critically again.

Much like the flu I think it will be with us forever.
For me the most worrying thing about it all is how bad the next one will be?
Zombies? 👹☢️

Seems to be a different country every week then media outlets (who i think have been a disgrace throughout all of this) report on it like its the end of the world, reducing people to worry and further depression.

They'll be scaring people about a Narnia variant next.

Found this thread quite reassuring. There is definitely some truth that people tend to be drawn towards more negative news, in my opinion, which is why people write it.

This thread is very reassuring and shows how the vaccines are working and what the headlines conveniently leave out.

Cases are going to go up as we allow more unvaccinated people to mix, that is for sure. But that is expected. The number of cases doesn't matter so long as the number of hospitalisations and deaths doesn't follow in any significant way, and as the younger people get vaccinated, the number of cases will drop off as well.

It's pretty scary for people like me who lost close relatives.

The worst thing will be if they start dicking about with regionalised rules again, which simply don’t work and just cause division, rebellion and confusion.
It's always made sense to me. Quite a few countries in the far East use regional lockdowns to enforce rules. Even Australia did it with Victoria at one point. I don't see why, for example, the people of Cornwall should have to suffer a lockdown to control a spike in London and the north west

Regional or National lockdowns - I really don't think the public will stand for more of them.

With all the bragging government have done about the success of the vaccine rollout, imagine then being told there's going to be more lockdowns.

The public will not be able to see an end to it all. Last 12-18 month fair enough, it needed to be done. But if we're still stuck in lockdowns after vaccinating nearly 60% of the country whats the point of it all.

I'm not sure about the far East but Australia is totally different to the UK.

Its such a vast country that regionalised lockdowns work. Once you are out of the big cities you can literally drive for hours between towns with nothing but outback or countryside in-between.

Its so much more difficult over here in a densely populated country.

I get that. I'm just saying countries like Taiwan and Korea mange it. I don't see why it's so unworkable here. It shouldn't be. It should be a good way of controlling outbreaks and keeping things running

The people of the town in lockdown will just drive over to the next town/county to use pubs/restaurants etc. Almost impossible to enforce it

This felt inevitable as you could still fly from India just a few weeks ago, government clearly havent learned any lessons in the last year.
