Sam Greenwood

I personally don't think that's a judgement you can make at this stage.

It's worth noting that we may already have paid a substantial loan fee for him. If for example we've already committed £1.5 million then is an additional £1.5 million still a good fee for him?
Of course it's a judgement we can make, we don't have to pay it. I'm not saying we will end up buying him, he might be terrible but if he does alright for us, scores 8+ goals from attacking midfield then he should be worth far more than £1.5m for a 22 year old English player.

From Leeds POV it makes little sense, to me anyway. If he's terrible then they get him back and could probably still get at least £1m for him for someone his age but if he's great then they're getting mugged off.

How can you say £1.5 million is a great deal when you've only seen him play a handful of games?

If true, shocked Leeds are paying him £30k a week. They bought him from Arsenal reserves with hardly any/no senior experience at all. Not sure, but I think they signed him when they were a championship club. Would have thought he’d be in the £10-15k bracket at most!

Promotion clause maybe?

Or has he signed a new contract since?

Surely relegation will have put a dink in that.. didn't think he was fancied that much at Leeds tbh.. didn't seem like it from what their fans were saying.

Because we keep paying 4m, 5m, 6m, 9m, 15m for players after seeing no good games for us? These players seem to get defended quote a lot, so why not the cheap one who we've actually seen play a few games (in a struggling side, which isn't quite the level of last year).

Up to now he's 2/2 from what I've seen and it looks like there's a lot more to come.

I wouldn't pay £1.5 million for him now.

Why would we? If it's guaranteed that we can have him for that price in the Summer if we want him, there's no advantage in not taking the full loan time to decide. He could have a career ending injury between now and May, so not point in paying early if we don't have to. I suppose he could play against Leeds, but that would be it.

According to the various salary sites he was on about £2K per week then got promoted to the Leeds first team in January 2022. They are likely to be guesstimating a professional salary of £30K based on Leeds' overall salary bill and information they have about other Leeds players.
Highly likely that he would have had a relegation clause so you can probably guesstimate £20-£25K/week at this point.

Clearly, as Greenwood has a contract until June 2026 there is no way he will be moving to a club and taking a pay cut. The try before you buy clause is presumably us paying around £20K of his weekly wages which would put him somewhere around the top earners. Presumably, his contract with us if we buy him has been pre-arranged and is likely to be the same as it currently is at Leeds. Come the end of the season, we can assess whether we're willing to pay him the wage he will want.

I guess we don't want another Ramsey situation where Greenwood does so well with us that he prices himself out of our range. However, Villa held all the cards with that deal while Leeds are distressed and clearly need him off their books, which means most of the leverage is on our side.

It's great news if we have an option to buy.

I was a bit concerned about Carrick turning him into a 15mill+ player for Leeds to cash in. Bit like what happened with Ramsey and Archer.

The MC brand of football certainly boosts forward player values.

Because it removes risk, if we perceive he's well worth that, which he looks to be.

Don't forget that the option to buy only works if the player is willing to sign the contract.

If someone else comes sniffing from down south it won't put us in a good position, especially if it's a prem team or they're offering more money.

We cocked up a similar situation to this with Chuba I think, had we got in early and got him on a contract (before he realised he would have had loads of options) we wouldn't have had to sell a 30 goal no 10 to a Champions League team for £10m.
