Should I re appeal a train penalty fine? If yes how can I do it more efficiectevly?

A 'Promise to Pay' notice must be obtained from our ticket vending machines if you do not have the ability to pay by credit or debit card, and want to pay by cash. The notice allows you to board the train with the intention of exchanging it with the train conductor, or at the next available booking office.

so if you don’t have a ticket and only have cash ( no card) you get a ticket from the machine ( on most stations but no all) and when you get on the train you hand it over to the conductor who allows you to pay cash.
I like that. Never heard of it before. But I like it.

There's a lot going on there.

- Nobody responding to you shouting three times in a minute at the ticket office.
- Not seeing the ticket machine due to your self confessed poor observational skills.
- Heavy traffic making you late.
- In a rush.
- Not seeing the conductor because the platform was busy.
- Platform too cold to wait 38 minutes.

They will explain all of these away as you not planning ahead. Don't expect any leniency, understanding or common sense from them.
They take "fare-dodging" very seriously with pretty much zero tolerance.
The only chance of leniency was probably from the ticket inspector, but you got a jobsworth.

To be fair they could make an episode of Seinfeld with the title being slightly altered from 'The Soup ....i, to the Inspector. ...i, he was chuffed with himself and was smirking at the thought of catching an evil doer - me.

I usually use National Rail to avoid the service charge but its sometimes worth paying it on trainline because if you dont scan your ticket you can claim a refund, whereas you cant on National Rail. You can apply for a refund but last time I did this they refused it so I thought i would lose the money on the ticket, thankfully the train I was supposed to be on was delayed so I applied for a refund and got it that way.
Cheers mate. I didn’t know that about the refund on trainline 👍🏼

Hi Guys thanks for your replies, I have come to see that over the years that Fmttm is a very good place to get an answer to various diverse questions. I think the general input is don't bother making a 2nd appeal they are still going to screw me, I think you are right, I get over it however what leaves a sour taste is I feel the inspector was watching the entrance and saw that I hadn't got a ticket which is really poor from him because he know I tried as well. I think from now I'm going to appeal and apply for refunds at the slightest hint of a train being late, the service has been dreadful in the last few years and I have ignored it and just accepted it but now I'm going to claim everything, I'm going to start pushing those letters of complaint.

@exeterboro was it a GWR train you got on?

I’d pay the £50 and write it off. It’s intially £100 now and could be worse.

Afaik GWR are going really hard on this like Transpennine Express on certain trains.

Yes it was GWR, it's just so annoying I wanted a ticket for travel anyway because I was on training away from where I am baised so I could claim all travel expenses.

Ask the guard before you get on(usually at the back) if you’re stuck in future.. can only say no
