Should I re appeal a train penalty fine? If yes how can I do it more efficiectevly?

Just pay the £50. Its not worth the hassle of appealing and you'll lose because there was ticket machines available to purchase tickets.

Its annoying but that's the rules. I don't agree with them fining people for not buying in advance but you aren't getting away with it so you may as well just pay it and move on.

But doesn't this apply to the rail company as well , without specifying an exact time they cannot say I have not allowed sufficient time especially as they did not have a body at the ticket office when it was open.
I think you need to accept that you travel subject to their terms and conditions, not yours, unfortunately. It isn't right or fair but it is what it is and we move on to the next journey.

As already mentioned download trainline you can buy a ticket in seconds and it stores your card details

Also alot cheaper, i paid £4 to get to Newcastle from boro, a chancer was charged £5 from thornaby to Hartlepool

The Boro to Newcastle direct trains are very cheap, if long winded.

Don't buy tickets through the Trainline, it charges a fee on top which if you go through the rail providers (as previously mentioned) you won't be charged. Get the National Rail app and buy tickets through their direct links.

Until I get a new phone, which is one more expense I can't afford at the moment then train line will be useless to me because my data is not up to scratch and I can't get a connection most of the time.
+ I have used Trainline over here in the past and could buy cheaper buying directly, but when I am out and about both are useless to me without a proper data connection to buy.
Next time you plan on dodging a fair make sure you smash the ticket machines first
Good suggestion, if you send me a picture of your missus first then I can make a choice on which one is more smashable👍

I'd fight tooth and nail personally, Just keep replying and complaining. So far I have done this for multiple private parking fines, they soon get sick when they realize you aren't going to give in. They wont issue a CCJ or court order over £50. This ruling is so they can eventually make the trains unmanned apart from Drivers and cleaners etc. Think about it, if you need a QR Code to get past a turnstile, you dont need anybody checking tickets and so on. When did this become an actual law because I seen somebody get on a connecting train recently so no need to show train tickets beforehand and he just bought one from the conductor. Does it just depend on the conductor on the day? Whether or not they are a jobsworth? Its absolutely shocking they try and enforce this. I would have given a fake name personally although I know that doesn't help you in this situation it may do in the future

I usually use National Rail to avoid the service charge but its sometimes worth paying it on trainline because if you dont scan your ticket you can claim a refund, whereas you cant on National Rail. You can apply for a refund but last time I did this they refused it so I thought i would lose the money on the ticket, thankfully the train I was supposed to be on was delayed so I applied for a refund and got it that way.

Unfortunately they will my 19 year old son 2 years had the same scenario and ignored all the correspondenceand ended up with a demand from the court for £640 for a £6.50 ticket he did not buy. The rail companies ( especially Trans pennine ) have a well oiled machine to ensure claim fines

I wanted to pay, but if I missed the train the next one was in about 38 minutes, I couldn't be bothered to wait on a freezing cold platform, so I wasn't inclined to go searching after the failed effort at the ticket kiosk , now I would know where to get a ticket, the machine or I would look for a platform conductor.

Sounds like you have caught the Grinch instructor, hopefully he has a terrible Christmas!

I think you have just been unlucky I use the train a couple of times a week and see lots of passengers when asked for a ticket from the conductor just ask to buy one and don’t think I have ever seen someone issued a Fine.
If you don’t use the train very often there is no way you would know about the promise to pay ticket or having a ticket prior to boarding the Train

What's a promise to pay ticket?

When does 'not sufficient time' become 'sufficient time', it can't just be when you get a ticket because that does not factor into any thinking poor service by the rail company.
That's exactly my point, they haven't actually got anything in the rules and therefore you could argue there's no obligation to turn up a set period beforehand - as you would expect to be able to turn up and buy a ticket at the ticket office

What's a promise to pay ticket?
A 'Promise to Pay' notice must be obtained from our ticket vending machines if you do not have the ability to pay by credit or debit card, and want to pay by cash. The notice allows you to board the train with the intention of exchanging it with the train conductor, or at the next available booking office.

so if you don’t have a ticket and only have cash ( no card) you get a ticket from the machine ( on most stations but no all) and when you get on the train you hand it over to the conductor who allows you to pay cash.

If you had gotten to your destination without challenge, would you have got off the train and then sought out a ticket office to buy a ticket for the journey you had just taken?

I suspect not....
isn’t it their responsibility to provide a way of actually collecting the fare?

I wanted to get off at Exeter Central, there is no way I could get out of the station without paying so your assumption isn't valid, I didn't even think about it because to be truthful I knew I would have to pay either on the train or at the destination.
