Spoiler alert - SPOTY

To be fair i've said the same for the last decade
When Murray won it 3 years out of 4 that was a joke, imho. Especially as in one of those years it was just because of the Davis Cup. Which even tennis fans don't seem to care about.

And the year Giggs won it.

It ceased to have any meaning the year Giggs won it. He'd been out injured for almost the entire season and become a bit part player at United. Just checked that was 2009, so i've been going on about it for nearly 14 years not 10

(I also got a bee in my bonnet when they failed to mention us reaching the UEFA Cup final)

haaland born in Leeds is overseas champion

Errr ok
Yeah, does feel like he should have been eligible if Dettori was. But then he'd have won it and the cynic in me wonders if the panel weren't keen on that for whatever reason, the fact he represents Norway etc.

The judging panel consisted of athletes Ellen White, Colin Jackson, Ellie Simmonds, Chris Paterson, David Coverdale, Rob Maul, Charlotte Harpur, Dame Katherine Grainger, Holly Hamilton, Barbara Slater, Philip Bernie and Gabby Cook.

The year Giggs won it was probably the biggest travesty. Jenson was robbed. Big time.

Don't really agree with somebody who hasn't actually won anything this year winning, at least not when there are people who weren't even nominated winning major titles.

She was probably England's best player in the World Cup, but we didn't win and she won nothing domestically either, whilst the likes of Ronnie O'Sullivan won championships.

I like Mary Earps though, I enjoyed watching her at the World Cup.

That's fair enough I suppose. But it shows the power of football. If Pickford was European champion and this year had helped England get to the world cup final through a penalty shoot out and saved a penalty in the final he would probably have been in with a shout too

The European Championship was 2022 though, it surely should be irrelevant to the decision for this year.

I can't remember who won SPOTY last year now, but I'd have had no problem with it having been Beth Mead for her performance at the Euros.

OK but the world cup was this year...

It was Beth Mead

Agreed, but can you see where I'm coming from with my Pickford analogy?

I can, but I'd have disagreed with Pickford winning it in that hypothetical too.

Kyle Walker was an integral part of a treble winning Man City team this year, the few games he missed were through injuries, he's arguably the best right back in the world, and he wasn't even nominated.

Mary Earps has won it for being part of teams that finished 2nd or worse in everything they competed in this year.

She's the first person this century to win it without actually winning any title in the year to earn it.
As far as I can see, the last time it happened was with Michael Owen in 1998, when he was "just" PL top scorer and Player of the Season.
Likewise, Mary Earps was "just" the best keeper in the World Cup and WSL.

I suppose the fact football is a team sport and it's an individual award does make it more difficult, as it's largely not her fault that her teams haven't won anything.
