Sunak urged to stop Braverman speaking alongside far right at Brussels convention

Shutting down the conference is setting a bit of a dodgy precedent isn't it?

Other than disagreeing with their political stance what was the reason?
Anti fascism I would guess. We found out what happened when we let it grow in the thirties

Farage was recognised for his far right fascistic views while still at school.

“ Against Farage’s proposed prefecture from a number of teachers who thought the boy was "racist" and "fascist" or "neo-fascist"

Whilst I don't like the police and courts being used to shut down a conference like this, even if it does give a platform to some with far right views, I do find it very funny to hear some of the most vocal opponents of freedom to protest now wailing about free speech

Yes. I don't think it should have been shut down, but the karma of Braverman getting what she wants to do in the UK done to her is just too perfect. Maybe she will take her case to the ECHR?

With hindsight. It would probably have turned out better if Hitler's rallies had been shut down wouldn't it?
Or if our reparations after ww1 didn't cripple the German people. Though I accept that we did propose cancelling those debts but asked the USA to cancel our debt too. We wouldn't do one without the other.

If I recall my history from school Germany did pay a fair amount of their reparations but largely from loans they later renaged on. And didn't Belgium occupy parts of Germany after the Germans missed a single payment.

Anyway my point is Hitler didn't happen in a German vacuum.

Not the point you were making, I know.

They do ask...

The point about WW1 and WW2. WW2 is pretty much WW1 part two. And even WW1 has some roots in the Franco-Prussian War of 1870/1 and that had roots in...

We Europeans are good at war, really good at it, we've had lots of practise it's why we were "good" at colonising/plundering the rest of the planet.

Decision over-ruled by the Belgian courts. It's back on.
Taking the personalities and personal dislikes away, I think it is the sensible decision.
If they start doing things like promoting genocide during the conference then they should obviously shut it down.

But shutting down opposition and people with opinions you don't agree with?
As I said, to me that is a dodgy road to go down.

Agreed. See 'The Economic Consequences of the Peace' by JM Keynes, who argued against the 'Carthaginian peace' of Versailles. He recommended a much less punitive approach, which still exceeded the reparations that were eventually collected.
