Sunderland Away Ticket Info

I've been offered opportunity by a mate who's a Sunderland fan tickets for the home end,I just couldn't bring myself to do it as I know I couldn't keep quiet if we scored, something I'm pretty sure is going to happen.
What's the worst that can happen? You get a clip? As the divs like to point out, we've got two heads remember so just make sure they clip your spare one.

Although I can't see any other way of it working, it isn't really a fair system. People attending this game will be given priority points that will move them further ahead of people who are not successful in purchasing tickets, this gives them a further advantage the next time tickets are issued.

I don't know any other way that it could work though.
That is what I meant by self perpetuating and ultimately a closed shop.
It is fairly obvious really.

The fact of the matter is it’s Sunderland away and everyone wants to go, it’s a derby and it’s easier to go to, fans have traveled the length of the country supporting the lads and deserve to have first dibs on tickets, it’s fair and square.

I agree for an overall definition of loyalty... and for home cup games you may have a point.

However, this is an AWAY game, so AWAY loyalty should be put first. I think the current point system for Sunderland is fair.

It wouldn't be fair on a supporter who's travelled up and down the country for the past 2 years going to 15-20 away games per season, to be placed behind a supporter who's had a season card for 10 years, but can only be bothered going to an away game when it's an hour up the road...

I am an example of the latter - I've been to every home game for 10+ years - but I've only been to 7 away games in that time period, mainly because I'm lazy and can't be bothered...

I would love to go to the Sunderland game, but I fully understand that there's 1000's of loyal away fans who deserve the ticket more than I do.
I don't agree about "away loyalty". I've watched Boro hundreds of times over the years away from home, just not so much this last two crucial seasons from a points perspective.
It is subjective. I can handle not getting a ticket, but just because somebody's circumstances enable them to buy tickets and travel across two seasons does not make them a superfan who should automatically get the limited tickets.
It does not work like this at other clubs.

I think the 2 year thing should be 5 years but those who get the tickets will deserve them for travelling up and down for two seasons.

Back in the day didn’t certain away games go on sale to those with patron numbers S and T first for high demand games rewarding those who had held their season tickets the longest? Or was that only for the European games.

Given it's just six days after an away game was so undersubscribed that it was pay-on-the-gate, I think "closed shop" is a bit of a reach.
I don't think that's true. All of the tickets were sold. Blackburn announced that pay on the gate was available only a couple of days before the match.

Don't you think that you are insulting fellow Boro fans here?

Some really good points in this post, particularly by @indeedido, @parmoboy, @Norman_Conquest and also @Sexpom and @fmttmadmin posing the counter arguments

The whole points thing is a really delicate issue and I'm really torn on it. On the one hand it seems common sense for those who shlep up and down the country on a regular basis to get first dibs for high demand games.

However, there is the argument put forward that over time it becomes a closed shop. I know Rob has said how can it be a closed shop if games are going to general sale. However, whilst many games going to general sale may well be the case at the moment it won't always be the case (I can't say either way as I haven't seen the stats, although if true I'd wager most general sales are midweek games, which are understandably more difficult to get time off work to get to).

We've had a few decidedly mixed seasons but if we're regularly challenging for automatic promotion at the top end of the Championship or even get into the Premier League then it's a different story for away ticket demand and the same faces will continually get the advantage pulling away points wise and monopolosing the away games. Many clubs who have run similar away schemes for longer than us have been criticised by their own fan bases for effectively running a closed shop in this way. If we go up at some point then we will 100% have the same issue. Which is why I can totally understand the arguments from those saying it is an unfair system that favours the few.

Ultimately, my biggest gripe with it all and probably why I just come down on the side of not being in favour of such a scheme is it is creating divisions amongst our own fan base. We are all Boro fans, but we are arbitrarily creating different categories of fans and effectively arguing who is best and deserves special dispensation. Fanatics that get to every game, Gold card holders, ST holders that get to 15 away games, STs who get to home games only, the geezer who lives in Lands End and can only get to one game a season. No one of us is any bigger or better a fan than another so should we not all have at least some chance of getting to experience that high demand exciting away game?

Could we potentially have a halfway house whereby those who go to every game buy an away season ticket (which they could once upon a time), allowing the diehards who never miss a match to guarantee a ticket but still allowing the vast majority of the fanbase to at least have a decent shot at getting away tickets? (As sales of away season tickets would be in the low 100's I would estimate, leaving a fair few up for grabs at even the most ramshackle hovel). I'm not sure if that would be a more palatable option? (Or even if by simply suggesting this I'm arguing against my point above that we're all Boro fans! 😄).

At the end of the day whatever system that's used is going to upset some people, so the club can't win.

NB: If you've stuck with my post this far reward yourself with a left over Christmas Quality Street, you've earned it! 👍

Blackburn had about 2k empty seats in the away end last week, plenty of chances for people to go and get points if they want to

Another shocker from the police, in the interest of safety we get barely any tickets so thousands will end up in the home end with pockets of trouble all over instead of just containing them in one place.

If they are that concerned then give us 5k tickets, insist everyone takes a supporters bus and keep us back after the game

Football must be the only sport where you can’t get a ticket to watch your team despite thousands of empty seats in the ground

Am not certain if it is actually the police in this csse. We shall find ouy but it may the club taking this stance.

How on earth have I done that?
What a bizarre thing to post.
I have said loyalty is subjective. I have also said I have so much time for those who do travel.
You could take offence at anything it seems.
You labelled those with high priority points "superfans."
No one with the 240 points is saying that about themselves.
